I think some of you guys are missing it. The price wouldn't be set at 200 bucks, it would be 400 or 500, and the ATT stores would offer a rebate of 200 dollars. Whether its instant or mail-in, and whether or not 1st gen iphone users could obtain the same deal, (maybe if we re-extended our contract by another two years), is yet to be decided, IF, this is even true.
sounds like apple's problem is not an external problem, but an internal one. Unless Ciarelli works in Cupertino, Apple should find employees who can seriously keep their word on not divulging "secret" info. I dig the suspense of apple not giving word of new products, keeps the fanboys excited about a potential new anything..but on the other hand, those kind of sites save a lot of people (like me) from buying apple products a bit too early.. which i suppose is the problem here
when will TUAW stop posting Forrester's rubbish. Is this McQuivey's "research" again?
i wonder if all these trollers said the same thing about the first generation iPod. Granted the iPhone doesn't have everything the t-mobile dash (which i own) has, but theres no denying that the iPhone holds the capability to be the absolute best phone on the market. Rather that waiting for the re-invented wheel to be smoothed, polished and put on display, at least recognize it in its rough early stages. If you dont like it, dont buy it, and don't waste your time talking about things you dont have. Go find a t-mobile dash site to post on.

did he just call att's service reliable? i have an iphone and travel back and forth between atlanta and the silicon valley, and its hardly reliable service.
good news on the VoIP, giving an ipod phone qualities is a great addition. I might get one myself seeing as how i have wifi everywhere i go but my car.
James McQuivey says nothing but rubbish. I'm surprised his dart-board logic ended up on tuaw. You can catch most of his writings and "independent research" on cnet.com, usually wrong. This is the same guy who said that iTunes sales were falling, and then announced that iTunes was responsible for 20% of all music sales in the US. Worst part is, for a person who holds a doctorate, he sources none of the information he presents as facts.
I would have expected more from a Syracuse grad.
bert,
its a decent keyboard for newbies, but only if you're going as far as Garage Band, and not looking to lay any actual piano or keyboard recordings. Past that you might want to spend a bit more money. I use an m-audio axiom 61-key midi controller with Logic Studio, works wonderfully. I got mine from Guitar Center for about $250, but of course, you can't use your apple gift card there.
great idea, but i think im going to wait till the Macworld Expo in January and use the credit towards a late Christmas present for myself.. hopefully a new macbook?
i dont get it. Since we all know that this happens each and every update.. why not just NOT UPDATE your itunes? i havent updated my itunes since 7.3 something..and my hacked iphone works just fine.
"out of the million people that bought iPhones in the last 3 months, half of them are eligible for and will get the store credit. 500,000 x $100 = $50 MILLION dollars"

Its not 50 million dollars. its 50 million dollars of store credit to an apple store. The money we spent is in apples bank account already. They're simply enticing people to buy more of their products, and they just dropped a whole new line of shiny new trinkets. Theres few things you could buy in an apple store for under a hundred bucks, and 100 bucks off anything in the apple store is a great reason to pick up another product for yourself, or a gift for a friend, seeing as how the holiday season is right around the corner. Heck, its a new nano for 50 bucks. Great marketing strategy, im sure not too many iphone buyers planned on purchasing a iphone for 600 bucks, and then an ipod two months later, but a lot of people will be doing just that.

I for one, will be picking up Logic Studio, (a product i would have bought regardless) ;-)
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I'm in the market for a new phone and money isn't a limitation. I'm also not partial to any particular US carrier, but here are some of the features I'd like to have: WiFi, GPS, good coverage in lots of places, push Gmail (a must!), physical keyboard (a must!), a touchscreen, decent battery life and a relatively slim body. And please, nothing that has a fruit logo on it. No offense to the fruit fans, though. Thanks!"
