Agreed, we'll probably have to wait for Moorestown until Intel SoCs are usable in mids.

The 80579 is the kind of thing you'd put in a multifunction router/firewall/ssl accelerator/ipsec gateway/voip box and possibly other network appliances that would need 3*GigE and a decent cpu.
How come no one has commented on the "over powerline" thing?

Don't any of you remember the b-o-p trials a while ago? Powerlines are fricken huge antennas, run signalling through that thing and you get a lot of RF noise pumped into the air.
"Sun's just doing this to keep J2ME alive!"

Hardly. J2ME is the closest thing that handhelds have to a lingua franca, roughly 8 of 10 devices supports it.

While a native program usually is better, you are looking at porting to 6-7 different platforms to get the same coverage as you get with J2ME. So unless you need access to native APIs, writing "craplets" is the best option.

For stuff like Opera Mini, Gmail or my local broadcaster's mobile teletext app J2ME makes perfect sense.
I thought the reverse was Gnab Gib?
Sic is Latin. Literally "thus", "so", "just that".

In modern usage, pretty much only used when quoting someone to indicate that a misspelling was in the original quote.

e.g. "you're [sic] dumb if you think a software hack can turn an lcd into a touch-screen".
ANd what happens in a room full of people

That reminds me of the joke that went around when voice controlled computers was supposed to become the next big thing.

I wonder what the gesture equivalent of format c: is.

Wait a minute.. Is this about providing better security against malware, or is this about creating a "secret compartment" so that the **AAs of the world have more control over what happens on my device than I do?
Ian,

the difference between SD and SDHC is really just two things:

FAT32 support. In any device where the main firmware is upgradeable that should pose no problem.

Block instead of byte addressing mode. This normally requires a change in the firmware of the SD controller. On some devices (for example many USB SD card readers used in PCs) this firmware can't be upgraded because it is burned in ROM. But on many devices, such as the N800 and many cell phones and cameras it can be upgraded. For those, all that is required is that someone takes the time to write a fw update.
"The comment was satirical."

I think you need to reread the definition of satire. For an example of this art that unfortunately seems to escape your grasp, go read Swift's 'A Modest Proposal'.

In addition, ALL CAPS is generally a sign of caffeine abuse and not a hallmark of satire.

Apple might be contractually bound to attempt to stop unlocking. Not to mention that Apple gets a cut of the contract, so it is also in their own interest.

As for craptastic network. If you were Apple, which carrier would you choose? The other US GSM carriers are on average as bad or worse than AT&T.
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I have a MacBook Pro and an Xbox 360 and I would like to get a 20- to 24-inch display that will support both devices. The speakers should be inbuilt, or there should be an aux out on the display to hook up external speakers. Help! Please!"
