You can already encode H264 in realtime on software... it's more about what kind of quality compromise you'll make by doing that
fuck yeah! pokeballs!
a unified repository is a terrible idea and what i dislike most about linux distributions. windows is a great operating system because of the incredible variety of third-party applications, and i think a unified repository discourages this.

it would be marginally acceptable if all windows users had sufficient proficiency with the built-in shell scripting (powershell / WSH) in order to accomodate basic tasks, but at present these are accomplished by third party applications.

furthermore, a unified software repoisitory takes away from the business model of paying for software, IRL, in a store, and promotes free alternatives that may be inadequate for a user's needs, thereby breaking a lot of investment
what on earth is wrong with the proprietary drivers?

the open source movement is such bullshit. everything is open source with a disassembler
jesus. are you serious? aero was the first thing i disabled
giantenemycrab: i figure windows isn't exactly a 'gadget', unlike said phone
i bought a phone incredibly similar to this in vietnam just the other week. it even has "DIGITAL LIFE" printed on the side, cost about $100 USD, and has a sweet touchscreen. nicer buttons tho :)
IZ DAT SUM CP???
the matroska container is a very clever animal. as well as supporting multiple audio and video streams [diffferent camera angles, different languages etc] it can also contain a text stream [subtitles], solve world hunger, and it streams nicer than avi with a lower overhead.

the only disadvantage is less software utilites work natively with it, to be safe you'd have to demux your mkv, apply your filters or transcode or whatever in raw or avi, and then remux into mkv.
correct me if i'm wrong, but i think vlc plays everything with internal splitters and codecs [and a little sprinkling of demonic power]. that's its own framework in itself
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I'm in the market for a new phone and money isn't a limitation. I'm also not partial to any particular US carrier, but here are some of the features I'd like to have: WiFi, GPS, good coverage in lots of places, push Gmail (a must!), physical keyboard (a must!), a touchscreen, decent battery life and a relatively slim body. And please, nothing that has a fruit logo on it. No offense to the fruit fans, though. Thanks!"
