Microsoft takes in $60b, sells 180m Vista licenses since launch {Engadget}

Jul 19th 2008 12:02PM I didn't know I was "required" to pay for updates every 12-18 months.

Ask Engadget: Best LCD monitor under $400? {Engadget}

Jul 18th 2008 1:12PM I'll try to answer.

It's not the size, as much as the resolution that is an improvement. 22" monitors are almost all 1680x1050, while 24" monitors are all 1920x1200. 26" and 27" monitors are also 1920x1200. So you get a big jump moving from 22 to 24, but not from 24 to 26.

What's too big? Well, on bigger monitors, you can put two documents side-by-side, which is useful for everyone. LCD televisions under 40" are generally 720p, which is 1280x720, a pretty low resolution for their size. Icons, text, etc. will be really big on one.

A 1920x1200 monitor was worth it to me. I can have many windows and programs open at once. And any decent video card will upscale DVD movies so they look great. For inputs, DVI and HDMI are the same thing and can both be connected to a computer, and they both use HDCP on any modern monitor. Good monitors should take care of you, input-wise.

Built-in speakers on monitors are usually pretty bad.

Jul 17th 2008 10:57PM My LG L246WP was only $326, but it was a discontinued model and Circuit City was getting rid of them. Still, that wasn't very long ago, so if by some chance you happen to find one I would definitely recommend it. It's a 24" P-MVA panel.

Samsung's low-power 128GB SSDs go mass production on the cheap {Engadget}

Jul 9th 2008 2:24AM You know what, I'll trade a little bit of speed to have a drive I can dropkick without hurting my data.

Gigabyte gets official with 8.9-inch M912V swivel screen netbook {Engadget}

Jul 5th 2008 9:18PM Nice. Great screen, convertible tablet, plenty of storage. This might be the one to buy.

ASUS' bigger, badder Eee PC 904 and 905 in the chute? {Engadget}

Jun 30th 2008 1:34PM That makes sense, just to save manufacturing costs by moving them all to the same casing.

Matrox M-series graphic cards go 4-up natively {Engadget}

Jun 30th 2008 1:30PM 1) Why does it have an SLI-type connector on the top edge of the card? Is Matrox working on something in that vein?

2) The cheapest card I can think of with two DVI ports is probably a Radeon 2400/3400 class. You can get two of those (for four displays) for ~$100.

AMD smells a comeback with ATI All-in-Wonder HD {Engadget}

Jun 26th 2008 2:03AM This is the test, now we find out just how committed AMD is to Linux support on its video cards, or if they're all talk. The old AIW Radeons don't work at all on Linux.

It's probably a 3650, not a bad GPU for an home theater.

Lian-Li's Tyr X2000 HTPC / gaming chassis towers in black {Engadget}

Jun 24th 2008 1:16PM That's a beautiful tower. The only downside (apart from size and cost, but those are a given for Lian-Li) is that it is incompatible with the WD Velociraptor drive.
