Two answer:
1) Pre-paid cellphone.
2) a Handkerchief or a voice distorted.

According the original source :he was fired because he stolen some computer from the campus (those computer was found in their house), and used some resources for personal purpose... also he installed SETI in some computer.

But it is more sensationalist to mention SETI instead of the rest of causes.

Ok, it can sound that *currently* Kindle is a best seller, but i doubt that it is the best seller item (of all time), specially in comparison with Harry Potter books.

It is the NY Times, so it is barely considered as a news.

and the phrase "seemed perfectly kosher" sound a bit as a sarcasm, specially when you are paying for a service that usually is cheapest or even for free.
