NVIDIA rumored (again) to be renaming its GPU lineup in the name of simplicity {Engadget}

Sep 26th 2008 2:09PM Except that if you dig around, you will find Crysis tends to be fairly CPU bound alot of the time.

So how can you have a sticker that says Crysis:Very High when you have no control over the machine and they could be running a Celeron 430 or Sempron LE.

Shuttle D10 desktop features built-in touchscreen, little else {Engadget}

Sep 22nd 2008 3:17PM Too bad they used a G31 instead of a G43 or even a G33.

Way to go Shuttle!
Releasing a brand new product based on a chipset that has already been replaced in the industry.
And since they didnt include an x16 slot, your stuck with crappy GMA3100 with no BlueRay or HD assistance

Next time try using G43 and include an x16 slot. Even if its only x8 Electrical, at least then you give people a choice and the same slot can still be used for x4 or x1 devices as well.

I really don't understand the people at these companies sometimes and why they design things so poorly these days.

You could do better with any old mATX tower, a 7" touchscreen and a dremel.

Microsoft and Cray deliver "mainstream" CX1 supercomputer: starts at $25k {Engadget}

Sep 16th 2008 7:50PM @Nekrik: Looks like they already do:

CCS = Microsoft Windows 2003 Computer Cluster Server
All the BLxxxc servers fit in the c3000 Chassis.

Granted that is 2003 and the article mentions 2008, but my guess is you're right and its only a matter of time before its officially announced.
The Server 2008 tab on that page doesn't have the HPC Edition even mentioned yet.

Microsoft and Cray deliver "mainstream" CX1 supercomputer: starts at $25k {Engadget}

Sep 16th 2008 4:46PM So Cray went and built something HP has had on the market for almost a year huh? Whoopty doo!

http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/blades/components/enclosures/c-class/c3000/

The HP c3000 also supports a special Blade called the BL2x220c which means you can cram 2 Servers with 2 Quad Cores in the space of 1.
So instead of 8 blades with 2 Procs each, you can fit 16 blades with 2 procs each (albeit with less memory on each node)
You can also deploy Quad CPU blades instead of only Dual CPU blades.
And the Intel Six Core Xeon 7400s (aka Dunnington) was released yesterday.

I would venture to say the HP solution is a hell of alot cheaper too since it doesn't say CRAY on the front.

Western Digital now shipping 500GB laptop drive: $220 {Engadget}

Sep 12th 2008 12:41PM I think someone at WD is bad at math.

$220 / 500GB = 44c per GB
$190 / 400GB = 47.5c per GB

Usually you charge the premium on the top end device, not the one right below it!

And before I get swarmed with HD Techies replying, I KNOW the insides of the 400GB and 500GB are identical which means it costs them the same to produce. But if they are going to put out a 400GB model, they should have done it at $175 or less.

Western Digital now shipping 500GB laptop drive: $220 {Engadget}

Sep 12th 2008 12:37PM Article says WD is shipping in volume, which means the places you would buy from don't have it in stock quite yet.

Wait a week and then check NewEgg, Amazon, etc.

AT&T gets official with U-verse Total Home DVR {Engadget}

Sep 9th 2008 1:42PM Not sure about BT Vision, but the box for UVerse is a Motorola VIP-1200 Series running Windows CE 5 with Microsoft's IPTV

AT&T gets official with U-verse Total Home DVR {Engadget}

Sep 9th 2008 1:20PM Right. They use IPTV and so all they are doing is streaming the data over your home network from the DVRs to the STBs. They use Multicasting from the CO to your house, but I dont know if they will use the same thing for streaming from the DVR to the STB or not. Will have to whip out Wireshark after the feature goes live and see.

Assuming your running at least 100mbps and an HD Stream supposedly takes about 10mbps, you should be able to get 8 or more HD Streams going in the house.
The average UVerse customer gets about 30mbps down from AT&T which is why your capped at 2 live HD Streams per household.

Even though they only support 4 streams total, you could, in theory, have like 6 UVerse STBs in your house if you had alot of TVs. You can only watch 4 live streams at once though. But with Whole Home DVR, there is nothing to say the other 2 boxes couldn't be watching recorded material during that time.

PS: I called them the other day about something else and in the Los Angeles area, they said approx Oct 4th is when this upgrade will be pushed out in my area.

AT&T gets official with U-verse Total Home DVR {Engadget}

Sep 9th 2008 1:15PM EXCEPT if you live in Southern California
I called them the other day because I still cannot get 2 HD streams at once in Simi Valley
After escalating past Tier 2 all the way to the Network Engineers, they found out that someone dropped the ball and the "VHO" (Video Home Office) in Irvine was never upgraded to support 2 HD Streams per household.

So everyone served by that VHO is screwed even though your DVR and STBs all now say that you support 2/2 (HD/SD) rather than 1/3 like it used to say.

If your as happy as I am about this, call AT&T and complain. 1-800-ATT-2020

PSP-3000 battery life diminished by new screen, Sony suggests buying a bigger battery {Engadget}

Sep 3rd 2008 5:32PM Does anyone else find humor in the fact that they axed the extended battery and less than a month later they are recommending it?
