Snow Leopard: what's broken (or working) for you? {Engadget}
Aug 31st 2009 3:09PM @Matty: Blame Adobe? But I'm sure the comment from Satish is supposed to be a comparison of pre vs post Snow Leopard, meaning Flash in Safari is taking up more processing than it was before the update. Also I thought Safari ran differently with Snow Leopard, which might be a more direct explanation than "blame Adobe."
As always, I could be wrong...
How would you change Apple's iPhone 3GS? {Engadget}
Aug 1st 2009 8:07PM I recently got my first iPhone (3GS), switching from being a longtime Palm man. Two things that really annoy me are:
1) TASKS: Complete lack of built-in task management. Apple should just add an option for every event to have a "completed" box that can be checked.
2) MAIL:
(a) I have six POP mail accounts, and I don't understand why my iPhone accesses every POP mail account every time I look at each of the six mailboxes. The very frequent access to the mail servers ends up locking me out sometimes.(b) Having six mail accounts means I have to press multiple (soft) buttons to get into each mailbox, then multiple button getting to the next in box, times six -- it takes too long for me to check my mail. Why not have at least the option of having all mail accounts show mail in a single inbox, so I don't have to spend so much time going in and out of every account's mailbox? (Oh, and how about letting me mark multiple emails as "read" -- the only bulk message feature is "delete")
(c) While the Push feature of Yahoo mail is great for most, I have Yahoo Mail Plus, a pay service that enables POP mail access for standard mail clients. So why, when my iPhone imported my mail settings from my computer, did it decide to change my mail to a POP account to an SMTP account in the iPhone? Sure, I was able to delete the account and create the POP account manually, but it just seems bad form to change settings on a user without at least asking.
Also wish there was Flash support in the browser, better battery life, better low-light camera performance, and I'm sure other stuff.
Editorial: Palm, iTunes, and the ties that don't bind {Engadget}
Jul 30th 2009 4:32PM I sure was skeptical when I saw the Pre was iTunes compatible, I think Pre users who didn't expect possible hickups with iTunes may have been a bit naive (not that I blame the users).

Jun 16th 2009 1:12PM Not sure what you mean by "true optical viewfinder" (unless you mean SLR through-the-lens viewing) but there are plenty of point-n-shoots at all price points with optical viewfinders. The point being, people can't always see an LCD screen in bright light, in which case any optical viewfinder is desired... Plus, some people just prefer looking through a viewfinder.

Jun 15th 2009 12:39PM To be fair, most new point-n-shoot cameras use more and more noise reduction as the ISO goes up -- so you won't see typical noise. But you do see a degradation of image quality at the pixel level. Look for yourself at this site (scroll down to the ISO tests), and you can see that the quality steadily degrades as the ISO goes up (look at how dark and solid the spade looks at the lowest ISO, but at 400 it's kinda of splotchy and faded).

Jun 15th 2009 12:31PM I agree, but clearly, this camera is for people who want a big zoom, as opposed to the LX-3, which has one of the smallest zoom factors I've seen. Also, if you really want to use the camera for videos, I've read the LX-3 sound quality is poor.

Jun 15th 2009 12:26PM I have an SLR too, but who wants to drag it (and big lenses) around everywhere? I can bring this camera with me at all times. Not to mention, you can usually bring a point-n-shoot to a concert, but not an SLR. The whole point you're missing is, this is a small, portable camera!

Jun 15th 2009 11:30AM I ordered this jack-of-all-trades camera yesterday. Seemed like the best camera that is small, has a big zoom, good movie mode (including zoom during recording), and good sound (the previous incarnations of this Panasonic line appear to suffer from poor sound quality). Wish it was cheaper, but oh well...
