The 'drill down' way of picking a letter is exactly how the Garmin Zumo GPSs (made for motorcycles) work when they are in the motorcycle mount (to make it easier to type with gloves on).
This article assumes that revenue must come from either the handset sale or the cellular service sale - google has ad revenue up its sleeve, something that nobody else has.

Currently, Google will PAY carriers to use Android - that is, if the carriers place the Google logo on the phone, Google will give you 50% of the revenue earned from that handset's searches.

Your calls, voicemail, & SMS will go through Google Voice. This gives them the power to learn a LOT about you and get even better at targeted advertising (Google Voice's voicemail is transcribed to text! Easier for you to read.... and easier for them to read!) Advertisers will pay good money if they know their ads are reaching their *exact* demographic.

The exact business model they're thinking about has not yet been revealed, but it's short-sighted to say that their model will fail when you're only thinking about models currently in use.
I got excited when I saw the $29 monthly fee - I thought it might be a cheaper data card..

...then I checked autonetmobile's site and saw that $29 gives you 1gb/mo max. $59 gives you 5gb/mo.

A netbook running linux (using its wifi as an access point) + data card + $60/mo unlimited plan is considerably cheaper in the long run if you plan on using more than 1gb/mo in data.

...and you can use that data card in another laptop when you're not in your vehicle.

My solution was to sign up for a Comcast business account. Servers OK, static IPs, no shaping/throttling/caps. $109/mo for 22/5 guaranteed w/ 5 static IPs. My "usual" speeds are ~40-45 down, ~7 up.

Why is this better than Dropbox?
I'm paying $99/mo for my 22/5 Comcast Docsis 3.0 on a business acct w/ 5 static IPs. No throttling/shaping, servers OK. $189 if I wanted 50/10. Actual bandwidth tests usually show I'm getting 30+/6+. Love it!
Oh, so it's like the free iPhone app Everytrail.
Thank you Joshua for the well written review. The device is as I expected.
Cris: My phone already does that.....for the photos taken with my digital camera! http://www.galarina.eu/GeoLogTag/Home.html

Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I'm in the market for a new phone and money isn't a limitation. I'm also not partial to any particular US carrier, but here are some of the features I'd like to have: WiFi, GPS, good coverage in lots of places, push Gmail (a must!), physical keyboard (a must!), a touchscreen, decent battery life and a relatively slim body. And please, nothing that has a fruit logo on it. No offense to the fruit fans, though. Thanks!"
