The sneeriness is just appalling. Toshiba is reacting to consumer demand and releasing a BD-enabled laptop. Liek, ohmigawd.

HD DVD is dead. Get over it.

Insular Yank bullshit, how awful that a filthy foreigner might see the difference in load time!
>> It seems that 21,600 consoles were totally messed over by "impact damage, wetting, pilfering and shortage" when one of the company's freight trains derailed en route to Long Beach, California.

Who cares? They would probably eventually fail for one of various other reasons, anyway.
JET SET RAAAAADIIOOOO!!!
Hmmm... isn't calling Apple "the big bad daddy of consumer electronics" a little bit much? They made a really popular MP3 player, an expensive cell phone, and a niche line of computers, last time I checked?
Nilay - the HDi stuff is done through software. It wouldn't need a new drive. So it's anyone's guess what the new drive is for. Maybe just cheaper, faster?
Coooome on, come to Dave :D
Hey, I took that picture at IFA yesterday. Surprised that it's
spread.

The Funai rep told me that they will NOT be manufacturing or releasing this player until it's clear whether HD DVD or BD wins. So, it's far from being finished. If you look at the back, it actually runs off a PC power supply.

You guys really are the original "Sneery tech blog". This is a piece of professional equipment, I'd imagine the people using it won't really care what it looks like.

>> it enables users to watch their HDV / miniDV tapes on the go, which isn't likely to entice you unless you shoot for a living.

Yes... that probably is who it's aimed at.
Nope, this is an optical drive and power supply only. It doesn't have its own video processor or A/V outputs - you need to hook it up to the Xbox 360 and have it do these.
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I just moved into a new apartment and have been reading about all of the new power strips out there, especially the green ones. I was wondering if you had any suggestions about which "green "power strips are out there with decent joules ratings. And when I say green, I mean power strips that have the remotes or switches to turn off all electricity flowing to certain plugs and with at least 2 plugs that are always on. I was looking specifically at sub $50 because I will need two, but if that is not possible I could be convinced otherwise. Thanks!"
