NTT DoCoMo hopes to diagnose disease, predict other misfortunes from cellphones {Engadget}

Mar 27th 2008 8:58AM When I hear "molecular communication" I immediately think of hormones or neurotransmitters.

The press release talks of "analyzing biomolecules in a drop of sweat or blood using a mobile phone equipped with a biochip." I guess you could call glucose a biomolecule.

In this case, "artificially synthesized DNAs and chemically energized motor proteins" could create insulin and release it as needed, replacing the malfunctioning pancreatic beta cells of the patient with diabetes.

As far as monitoring "excitement, emotion, stress...," I don't know if you want to be attached to a device that will deliver a hormone that will turn you into a Stepford Wife (or Husband) just because someone took your parking space.

It's scary to think that all this can happen automatically, and flawlessly. Their press release mentions that "the biochemical analysis would be transmitted to a medical specialist." So there might be a human somewhere monitoring all these users, pinging these devices to release serotonin when it looks like they might be getting a little antsy.

Motorola splits in two: Mobile Devices, and Broadband and Mobility Solutions {Engadget}

Mar 26th 2008 1:00PM One TWIT pundit is saying that Motorola might snatch up Palm. But, this was before the split was announced.

5-year-olds repair OLPC laptops at Nigerian "hospital" {Engadget}

Feb 3rd 2008 11:59AM Why isn't something like this being done in the US? Could it be our entrenched litgiousness makes manufacturers fearful? Would if the public demanded it?

Hands-on with Sigma's DP1 {Engadget}

Feb 1st 2008 8:25PM ... less than $800. (sheesh, you can't use the less than symbol)

Hands-on with Sigma's DP1 {Engadget}

Feb 1st 2008 8:23PM 28mm, f/4, maxing out at ISO 800?

This is mostly an outdoor camera, since you'd be hard pressed to shoot many interiors, especially without image stabilization (IS).

BTW, the Canon G9 sensor measures 7.6 x 5.7 mm, and the DP1 is 20.7 x 13.8 mm, so that's 6x the area of the G9. I don't think you can get a good image at ISO 800 with the G9, but then again it has IS.

If it were 35 mm, f/2 with close focusing, and an acceptable IQ at ISO 1600, it might be doable for

How would you change Amazon's Kindle? {Engadget}

Feb 1st 2008 7:17PM People who are saying, "please not another gadget," are right.

It's another set of batteries and charger to babysit, plus it's DRM'ed to the hilt. This isn't progress. You don't really own any of the content you're purchasing. You couldn't sell your Kindle to somebody else. All this is tied to your Amazon account, and if you misbehave, then can make it all vanish.

I don't see why you can't get by with a screen the size of the iPhone. I'm constantly reading books on my Treo.

iPods won't crash your pacemaker says the FDA {Engadget}

Feb 1st 2008 4:41PM I've been in contact with Dr. Bassen, the lead author of this study, and I've read his prepublication paper.

In the paper he refers to the journal article referencing the study "highly publicized around the world" published in Heart Rhythm which alleged iPod electromagnetic interference with an implanted pacemaker. It was a case report of a single patient who had fainted, and was tested with an iPod to see if this could be cause. He also writes, "The authors concluded that 'Warning labels may be needed to avoid close contact between pacemakers and iPods.' Soon after, a clinical study was performed and found 'no interference for any of the eight pacemakers or the ICD (implantable cardiac defibrillator)."

I'm tracking down the story as reported by Reuters last year of the 17-year-old who tested 100 patients, and found interference in 50% that was supposedly also published in Heart Rhythm.

Update on the 700MHz auction: "C" block at $4.3 billion and rising {Engadget}

Jan 30th 2008 1:47PM There's a reason for the stalled D-block auction. Some are suggesting Cyren Call's undo influence in killing the Frontline bid has tainted the auction:

Sony A300 and A350 DSLRs with swivel-screen and live view leaked {Engadget}

Jan 28th 2008 5:20PM What I'm waiting for is for them to put a decent-sized sensor in a compact digital cam. Something that can do a good job at handling noise at high ISOs, but that you carry with you always. I understand that Nikon might be coming out of a few models.
