Walt Mossberg promises 3G iPhone in 60 days {Engadget}

Apr 5th 2008 10:34PM WooHoo - iPhone will get 3G only 5 years after nokia and sonyericsson handsets had support for 3G integrated, and only 1 year after 4G / LTE was rolled out in Korea. Woooooow, Go Apple - you guys really know how to innovate.

Sep 17th 2007 6:46PM All this iPhone nonsense is good news for the consumer in the UK. I've gone from wanting one to not wanting one if it does turn out to use EDGE and on o2 - their network sucks compared to Orange (and I use Orange for my personal phone and o2 for work so can make a fair comparison).

Anyway, I'm not going to switch my personal contract to o2 but will expect Orange to give me a much much better deal to retain my custom - and the other networks will no doubt need to follow suit to avoid increasing their churn rates.

So even if you don't buy an iPhone, the chances are that those will do will help you get a better deal from the other networks.

Sep 17th 2007 4:52AM My UK Blackberry this morning has started to show the 'EDGE' network icon. EDGE is a technology for faster data access but was also deployed by AT&T in the States for iPhone.

Interestingly, o2 always said they wouldn't deploy an EDGE network due to it being inferior to HSDPA.

More interestingly, if o2 are rolling out EDGE to support the iPhone it means we probably won't get a 3G iPhone this side of xmas.

Sep 17th 2007 4:07AM "too bad with free unlocks carriers lose the exclusivity."

Too bad you forgot that the carrier needs to support visual voicemail in order for the iPhone to work properly - so unlocked phones used on a different networks will not work properly.
