Bell, Telus getting ready to pull GSM trigger? {Engadget Mobile}

Jul 25th 2008 4:51AM Actually, why can't you? The only continents not covered by CDMA are Europe and Africa (well, and now Australia).

Samsung breaks 150 million US handset sales {Engadget Mobile}

Jul 25th 2008 4:46AM Geez, did they kill your dog or something? And Samsung sells plenty of phones to T-Mobile that are worth using- just not T-Mobile USA. The plus side is that any T-Mobile phone can be used with any T-Mobile SIM so get a nice locked Samsung from T-Mobile Germany or something and use you T-Mobile USA card.

Jul 24th 2008 4:22AM Please, can't everyone get with one standard (or two at the very most) already? How about ISDB-T for Japan/North+South America and DVB elsewhere? Too annoying.

Affordable phone rentals in China with Yoyoor {Gadling}

Jul 24th 2008 3:16AM Ouch. Depending on usage patterns it'd be smarter to get a phone and SIM there and get live assistance from the local carrier. A regular China Mobile or China Unicom SIM charges less than $.10/min to call the US and about $.02/min local calls. If you use internet heavily this would be a better deal- China Mobile charges about about $4.50/MB (China Unicom just pulls $3 from your balance and gives you 100MB when you activate internet- way cheaper but it's GPRS, not EDGE). I'm pretty sure both carriers offer a similar "concierge" service; it's just spread across a few different numbers instead of one place.

Again, I can see this as a great deal depending on usage patterns (or how "noob" the traveler is), but most people would be better off setting it all up on their own.

Jul 23rd 2008 11:31PM Well, who says CDMA and GSM can't coexist? China Unicom has been doing it for ages.

Jul 23rd 2008 5:41AM If the lawsuit goes badly, looks like these will be the only game in town.
