Why can't they focus on getting the network running above ground in SF first?
I second Tripit. Its pretty amazing. And their iphone app organizes all your travel detail effortlessly. No data entry. And freee.
Um... how about refunding all of us in SF who never have access to data at all? That would be a great plan. Or the "sometimes works" 3g plan for $10. Who cares about data caps when you cant even connect?
Right! The fastest cellular network I can never connect to! Awesome!
Full bars + 3g in my office in downtown San Francisco. On the speedtest app I get 1.7 megs up and 98kbps down. I really didn't expect that one.... Might have to stop blaming the network for how slow and crappy all the apps, including safari, load.
Does this mean Ill be able to upload a pic to Facebook from Dolores park after the upgrade? On the "current" 3G network it only takes about 2 1/2 hours...
AT&T - "More bars in more places you will never be."

For this to be really really useful in a city like SF where everyone has an iPhone but AT & T only has marginal service AT & T should allow users to roam on other user's MicroCell. They could build out a huge neighbor net to make the iPhone into a functional device.

Its sad that I shelled out $300 for the phone, $300 for the T-moble ETF, $30 a month for non existent 3G and I am going to shell out the $200 for this device too. All for a phone that just doesn't work. I'm a sucker.
The connectivity issue is huge. Gave up on voice a long time ago. I'm scared of the day I have to call 911 and it doesn't connect, but I won't be surprised. All those fancy apps are crippled without a network. Need to find a bus in a hurry. Ha right, you have to walk three blacks to get a signal. Need to check a price in a store? Nope. Gotta go outside to get a signal. Need to find your friend on the other side of the loud concert hall? Send up smoke signals cause you sure as hell cant text them.

I am always talking about this cool app or this cool thing I can do with my iphone but attempting to show someone always leads to me saying "but I have no signal right now." So yeah with wifi at home the iphone does all kinds of cool things, but then so does my Mac at home.

Just so ya know I live in downtown San Francisco, not some area on the fringe of ATT coverage.
Nilay so wins this.
I always say more bars in more places I'll never be.
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I am looking for a 12- or 13-inch ultraportable that can also play modern games at a reasonable level, for less than $1,000. I know the brainiacs out there can help me out. Love the site, thanks!"
