@solmar
they keep from dslr:
- big sesnor
- exchangable lenses

they add:
- reliable 100% WYSiWYG viewfinder.
the current TTL systems are not 100% WYSiWYG, beacuse: they rarely have 100% covereage AND they change dopth of field with extrabright screens, see e.g. here:
- much smaller buld ( lens can be closer to sensor, no need for retrofocus design in wide angle
- potentially quite operation ( no mirror slap)

potential propblems:
- AF implementation ( they could use reflection off the shuller for an AF system similar to dSLR
- quality of electronic viewfinder
- lag-time of electronic viewfinders

At the end you have system with similar image quality, higher mechanical reiability ( no mirror flap), simpler construction, smaller / more lightweight...

The best netbook at the moment is in my view is any used centrino-subnotebook, as e.g.>
- X40 thinkpad
- Fujitsu-siemens P7xxx
- the sub 12 inch sonys

Why:
-similar price & weight as EEE PC & Co
- similar communication options
- more flexible (can do ofice work without limitation)
- more & better battery option
- better build quality since it was aimed at the upper market end.
Hi,

the filter thread on the pancake lens is 43 mm according to the picture ( ~1.7 inch if this is more usefull to you)...
Still not as helpfull as photo with a reference, but better than nothing.
Hi L.M. Llyod
one reason to go for an SLR is the bigger sensor, it is ussually not available in a P&S.

It is also nice to have live-view and sensor autofocus in addition ( not in stead of) the prism.
Why?
- the viewfinder is not WYSIWYG. You can not accurately judge DOF in current dSLR ( esp. with fast lenses)see e.g. here: www. dphotoexpert. com/2007/09/21/live-view-versus-the-cheating-dslr-viewfinder/ ( remove spaces), However, I believe with the canon 5D you can fix part of this with different focus screens
- the focus point can be put where evere it is needed in the frame ( as with P&S), dSLR AF-sensors are always at fixed positions

However I thing the main reason this stuff is produced is marketing: people are used to look at the lcd for framing from P&S, and miss this on dSLR
@joe:
The 40D and soem L glass is good, but L glass is not superior in general. Have you had a look at the pro and ultra pro Glass from Olympus?

It is likely that canon suits YOU better, but it is not superior in general.

The advantage of this camera over the 40D:
- Autofocus in full-timelive view available
- lighter & smaller, thus ,more portable
- tiny pancake lens ( 25mm 2.8)

again not in general better or worse than the 40D, just a different tool, for adifferent task..
Hi,

this is likely not a rip off, it i just rebadged. Asus were selling there notebooks in the US mainly via resellers and not under their own brand. May be someone still had contracts from this period and is using them.

cheers

I am sort of missing the x61s thinkpad in there... starting at 2.7 lb...
cheers

I hope for an ebook reader for pdf with anotation function at areasonable price.
I even would get an olpc just for that.

I might be wrong, but:

would this thing not be the PERFECT ebook reader:
-sunlight is no broblem
-should no problem to load/import pdf
- enough computing power to make notes in the file
- reasonable priced ( compared to all other ebook readers)

r.
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I commonly need to boot a system from an external disc and take a snapshot of the host system. I also then need to burn a copy of the image to a DVD. While I can do it with two separate external devices, and two power supplies, and two I/O cables, it'd be nice to find a small dual-drive enclosure. It would need to have USB, eSATA, and FireWire. Either slim-line or half-height bay for the optical burner would be fine, and space for either a 2.5- or 3.5-inch hard disc. Any ideas?"
