Ask Engadget: PC or Mac for back to school? {Engadget}
Aug 24th 2007 4:11AM Non-issue really. I use both Macs and PCs. Most people bitch about Windows and viruses, BSOD...well, don't use it. There is a Windows free world in PCs, and at the pace it's evolving, it'll overtake both Windows and Mac OSX in the long run. For the price of a Macbook get a Thinkpad and run Ubuntu in dual-boot while you need to get the hang of it.
Mac OSX is great, and as an OS for a novice, I'd recommend it. iTunes is great (unlike their crappy windows version),as is a host of free, or damn cheap apps (omnigraffle comes to mind). Seeing as you're going to be in IT...take a shot at an open-source setup. All you have to make sure is the laptop is well supported.
I don't really understand what IT security is anymore, but being able to check the source of any program, as well as having the kernel source available to you, could be interesting.
