Any type of software theft device is pointless. I mean, okay, I can see it being helpful, but if I stole a laptop or bought a laptop I assumed was stolen, the first thing I would do is reformat the hard drive. That would erase this software no matter what.

Also, this software is dependent on the thief or whoever ends up with it connecting to the internet. It will probably happen, but until they connect you get nothing.

I haven't done research into this, but why don't they just come up with some sort of device that isn't software that, when stolen you can just report it and it gives the location or something. We can make GPS the size of a flash drive, why can't we put one in our laptops?
Except that CVS/Walgreens/any pharmacy makes so much money on the prescriptions and less on the non-drug things so they aren't necessarily customer dependent (numbers wise). If a store gets less customers, they don't need as many people working at once. Plus, whether or not the economy sucks, you co-pay generally stays the same so an economic downturn isn't going to effect these stores as much.

BB and CC on the other hand....they need to keep staffing their employees while at the same time people are spending less so either less profit overall or they are losing money.

People will still need drugs, no matter the state of the economy, esp with baby boomers getting older.
at Tom:

The iPhone doesn't get it for free. People with the iphone pay every month to use their phone on top of whatever they paid to begin with. That was the idea of buying a phone and spending more, since there would be software updates.

And no, the new iphone still costs more than the ipod touch...it's just that ATT is paying for part of the phone when you sign a contract with them.

Why would apple put millions of dollars into developing new software updates for people who don't give them money on a monthly basis? Yeah, I understand you "paid all that money" up front or whatever, but you also paid that money up front to have an ipod...guess what, its still an ipod. Put your headphones in it and listen to your music.
Eligibility for upgrades for current ATT customers is based on the fact that you already have a subsidized phone, which was priced down based on the fact that you would use it for 2 years.

Current iPhone owners don't need to worry because they bought the phone UNSUBSIDIZED and can upgrade at will.

Technically, shouldn't an iPhone owner be able to upgrade to any phone at anytime because of this, too tho?
It makes sense to offer a discount to current iPhone owners though. Most people that wanted an iPhone have gotten one. My sister even bought one a month ago, not knowing a new one was coming out. Just because the people on this site know about a new version, doesn't mean the general population does.

Apple has sold so many iPhones, the only way they are going to sell alot of the new version is to offer a reason for people who have less than 1 year old iPhones to upgrade. Remember, if they even would sell the new one to me AT COST, I would still be renewing my contract with ATT, giving them 2 more years of their subsidized fees instead of just one more from my current contract.
No, you will need a device compatable for the 700 mhz frequency.
How else would you connect to google so that google can tell you where you are? Wifi and edge are the only ways....unless you have it hacked under tmobile.
I think it would be valuable in the likelihood that say you go missing...then your loved ones or family members can say "this is his DNA" and they could match that with any John/Jane Doe's found.
yes please
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"For a long time I have been searching for a portable device where I can store all of my CDs in MP3 format and stream the songs wirelessly to my HiFi system. The portable device must I've tried FM transmitters, they all suck. I don't want a docking station. Any help? Thanks!" have a display so that I easily can scroll through the playlists (I don't want to use a TV or monitor). I suppose that there must also be a second device that is connected to the HiFi system that would receive the wireless streams from the portable device.
