Not really... if the set top (commodity) business margin is crap, then sell it and keep the rest of the infrastructure. With your car maker analogy, Toyota for example does not own the company that makes the tires; i.e. the commodity component.

Agreed. Having been a Product Manager for consumer products, we (large multinational company) never subscribed to such an accounting practice to require the end user to pay for firmware upgrades. This was for broadband routers and DSL modems. So, while I have been reading about this for ages, I still don't understand exactly what Apple is doing....

"I am trying to configure out a really dumbed down and intuitive PC for my grandmother. She recently had a stroke and while she is under my care I would like to repurpose a laptop for her to surf and email her children. Anyone have any experience with what input devices and UI's are really understandable for the over 80 crowd?"
