Yeah, they're not really competitors, although it may seem that way on the surface.

Square will be good for Craigslist sellers, tech support contractors, street vendors, etc.

VeriFone MAY do well in the retail space, but other than Apple and Microsoft retail stores, pretty much every retailer uses the traditional cashwrap setup. I'm not sure how likely a store like Macy's will be to move over to a "mobile cashwrap" setup and make the investment in iPod touches + 2 year contract with VeriFone. That setup works for Apple Stores, because they have several employees on staff to answer questions and pitch sales to people. Most traditional mall retailers tend to just let people walk around and let the products sell themselves.

The only reason VeriFone felt like they had to rush this announcement was so they could piggyback on Square being all over the news media.

(01): I emailed them back with a strong argument based on the fact that there are already 4 other FML apps on the App Store (one of which is the #3 free app in the US), and they just said to resubmit when 3.0 comes out with parental controls. I would totally understand if there weren't any other FML apps on the app store already, but since there are the inconsistency is really frustrating.
