@Wwhat I agree. But why is it that the U.S. government's infrastructure as a whole can't seem to innovate and modernize without making some rich fatcat even richer and fatter?
@Mateen We can be, and are. I saw an article several months ago about how the NSA/FBI/Pentagon/somebody else contracted with Microsoft to provide a "secure" version of Windows for governmental use.
"...it's slow going because the Predator network is more than a decade old and based on proprietary tech -- too bad it's not proprietary enough to keep prying eyes out of it."

The military should've used Linux. That way they could have long ago hired some in-house Linux developers to keep their war toys from talking to the enemy.
What I don't understand is how Sebastian Anthony can cite an article that is 15 months old! I'm referring to the source article of the 2022 figure. Even if the deadline of HTML5 hadn't been altered in the last 15 months, it's irresponsible to cite such old sources and think you're maintaining unquestioned credibility.
Sebastian,

"Is grammar really get you that angry? You should get out more."

"[Y]ou must see errors in the Grammatical Matrix everywhere you look!"

"Hm, so he can be rude, but I can't?"

" Do you really think there's a special place in Heaven for grammar trolls...?"

"Are you the Big Story Decider in the sky now or something?"

And that's just on one comment page. You can be rude too, of course, but it doesn't mean that you have to. The "yeah, but he started it!" defence doesn't really work past 5th grade or so. There is a thing called professionalism, and your pettiness, name-calling and willingness to feed the so-called trolls has no place in it. That is, of course, unless you actually want the quality of the comments here to slowly devolve into that of Youtube, in which case -- GO TEAM! . (I can't wait to see what "title" I'll get in a sad attempt to deflect the issue).
Love how there was not a single mention Chromium for Linux and how it, too, just got bookmark sync ability.
The best thing to come out of Chrome OS -- Adobe forced to actually write a finished, stable, version of Flash Player that doesn't exit full screen when using keyboard volume controls. ;)
Oh, and the reason you'd want to choose the x64 edition is if you have more than 3GB of ram, since you need a 64-bit OS to take advantage of it.
I've been using Jaunty x64 for a few months now, and not a single architecture problem. I've had a problem or two when I installed Jaunty via Wubi for some reason, but none with a real (non-Wubi) Ubuntu install. And if you ever have any architecture problems, you can always force the installation with getlibs.

A tip: go to http://noncdn.releases.ubuntu.com//karmic/ and download the torrent of the *.iso. It'll be way faster than Ubunut's servers for at least a few days. Just make sure you get the right one. For a regular 64-bit desktop install (as opposed to an upgrade), you'll want the "ubuntu-9.10-desktop-amd64.iso.torrent" file.

It looks like Chrome OS is going to be based on Ubuntu (or Debian), because all of the binaries are DEBs.
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I need help! I want a small pocket camcorder but I'm not sure which one to get. I don't want to fall into the hype of the Flip because I worry two hours won't be enough. What should I be looking for when considering a small camcorder and where can I get a good quality one with expandable memory? Thanks!"
