Mar 5th 2008 8:26PM Rollins, is it possible Vista doesn't suit all scenarios. As you know, and as the leaked Microsoft suggest, Vista has a number of issues which may or may not matter to you depending on your hardware, software and the way you use your OS.
The fact is that Vista has to mature quite a lot before it could replace XP in all scenarios, and I'm afraid this won't happen before Win 7 (which is, more or less, Vista Reloaded).
XP also has a number of issues before SP1 and SP2, and keep in mind it was a relatively small incremental change over Windows 2000, while Vista is trying to redo a lot of stuff, which takes time to get right.

Dec 17th 2007 3:39AM --I remember when XP came out and everyone hated how the start button changed and how stupid it was and that they were so glad they could change it back to 98/2000 mode. It's the same kind of thing.--
I am an XP user, and I actually still run my Start Menu in classic mode. The new start menu designs are targeted at casual PC user, so it's no surprise power users will scoff at them.
I'm not particularly afraid of change either, I picked up Office 2007's new interface in few hours and I love the extra productivity it provides me with.
Vista's problem however, is that as of right now, both power users and casual users see it as an OS that does worse in the tasks they want to perform with it. Be it work or entertainment. There's no magical switch to make Vista as efficient as XP, like there is with the start menu.
Of course, I don't underestimate the remarkable ability of the average computer user to just use whatever you throw at him, bad or good. It's why, after all, Microsoft makes most of its profits on OEM licenses, and not retail.
The big question is: can I do my work on Vista? My machine came with Home Premium and I'll say that, yes, I can do my work. But with less efficiency, power-wise and time-wise, not to mention stability/performance issues, and that some of the changes in Vista appear to have been made for the sake of change, without any goal or reason.
I don't need to justify in a grand way why Vista is a disappointment, I just pick the option that lets me do my work easier, and utilizes my hardware better. It's XP as of now.
From this perspective, Vista is a disappointment, since you expect newer product version to better do what you want it to do, versus be better just on paper, because of a list of fancy technologies with fancy PR names (and I do know in depth what those technologies are, as a developer myself).

It's more complex computationally as an algorithm, but when we get that algorithm right, it'll pay off multiple times, compared to a flying robot.

Do you know what though. As an Apple customer (within reason) who's been following Apple closely for years, their quality isn't dropping. They always had some problems with their hardware/software here and there.
What happens now though, is they get even more press than before, and they have more customers than ever before, iPod being the best sold mp3 player and all.. So those quality issues are really starting to come out more often.
I really wonder for how long will Apple manage to sustain their image with this kind of situation. And it'll only get worse unless they figure out a more robust way test their products.
....Which means coming later on the market, and plenty of leaks which the competition will copy. Guess not happening.

Jesus guys, look at what computers have become. Cameraphones, PDA-s and gaming multimedia devices.

Which is a shame, since there's amazing value to be untapped on the Apple platforms (look at Adobe's software on OSX).

Oct 21st 2007 4:58PM Unless I woke up in a cartoon universe today, where all characters have memory span of average 2 seconds, I honestly can't believe someone is even trying to explain this is a bad disguise: how on Earth would even the most realistic disguise help you with criminals in the first place?
