Keepin' it real fake, part CXXXVIII: HiVision knows that even netbooks need fake friends {Engadget}
Aug 30th 2008 4:15PM It looks like the first one is a Razorbook 400 rebrand.
The next 2 (white/black) look like EEE PC with different hinges. (only so many ways to design a laptop from OEM parts)
The silver/black one looks like it's using the Dell netbook keyboard.
Sony VAIO Z-series vs. MacBook Air: fight! {Engadget}
Jul 16th 2008 2:53PM Ultraportable with OS X (and no hacks) means MacBook Air. It's that simple.
The Z is pretty impressive, but IMO the Lenovo X200 is also great.
12.1" screen (but with full size keyboard) paired with Centrino 2 and standard parts for a starting price of $1199. No optical drive, though.
IMO, it goes:
Style: MBA > Z > X200
Specs: Z > X200 > MBA
Price: X200 > MBA = Z
Hands-on with Kodak's latest and greatest {Engadget}
Jul 11th 2008 1:12AM The Zi6 seems pretty good.
- It's got little internal memory, but is expandable unlike the Flip/Vado.
- Bulky compared the Flip/Vado, but is only about the size of 2 iPhones stacked together (Yes, the 3G has a curved back).
- Captures widescreen video (720p, but probably not high quality).
- Captures 3 MP stills (Flip/Vado = no still captures).
- H.264 encoding
- $180
No optical zoom, though.
Amex Digital gets a little too inspired with new portable Super Multi Drive {Engadget}
Jul 9th 2008 1:04PM Whether you're attempting to support Engadget's comments, criticize them, or make a bad joke, take note that the MBA SuperDrive is silver anodized aluminum, not glossy white plastic.
ASUS UK helps us sort out the Eee PC lineup, forgets to help {Engadget}
Jul 8th 2008 9:19PM So many of them... And this chart doesn't list the 4G Surf, the 8G (phased out?), or the 900 16G XP (too new?)!
They need to phase out some of this mess! I would get rid of the old 900 models and only keep the 900 16G models. The 7-inch models should get some serious price cuts and maybe some discontinuations.
ASUS looks to clear out Eee PC 900s with $100 rebate {Engadget}
Jul 8th 2008 3:41PM To clear up the mess of 9 inch models:
The original EEE900 models were priced at $549:
- 12GB with Windows XP
- 20GB with Linux
These are the ones with the $100 rebate.
The new EEE900 models:
- 16GB with Linux ($399)
- 16GB with Windows XP ($449)
The new EEE901 models:
- 12GB with Windows XP ($599)
- 20GB with Linux ($599)
The EEE900 series has a Celeron processor and 4-cell battery.
The EEE901 series has a Atom processor and 6-cell battery.
Now, Asus has to lower the price on the 7-inch series since one of the 900 models is $399.
eMachines bores us to tears, burns our eyes with cheap new desktops {Engadget}
Jul 2nd 2008 4:10PM 1GB RAM is fine for Vista without Aero.
@kal: Apple doesn't just make things in white plastic anymore. MacBook, AirPort, and iPhone 3G are the only white plastic products if I'm not mistaken. The rest are anodized aluminum.
Sony Vaio FW and SR series show up on Circuit City {Engadget}
Jun 29th 2008 4:31PM The Sony VAIO X505 used that keyboard style in 2004.
The MacBook was first released in 2006.
The 16.4" screen is a new standard using a 16:9 aspect ratio and movie watching.
Atom-powered D945GCLF Mini-ITX motherboard now available {Engadget}
May 19th 2008 7:55PM The 1.6GHz Atom will probably provide 55% of the performance of Celeron D 2.66GHz. (Not counting hyperthreading.)
As far as I can find:
PCMark05 scores
Celeron D 331 (2.66GHz) - 2632
(UMPCPortal ~0.87/MHz) Atom 1.6GHz ~ 1392
Considering the Celerons had an 84W TDP and the Atoms have a 2-4W TDP, half to two-thirds the performance isn't too bad.
