"Camera tech that is optimized for stills don't seem to do so well for videos. Recording video requires a lot of expensive technology and development, they'd have to use RED's business model to charge as little as RED charges."

I don't buy this. Nikon isn't some bottom of the barrel charity. They've got the bucks to throw around and they could easily release a 6-9 megapixel camera that records at 24fps onto a flash/disc based HD.

You're making it sound like it's impossible, when in reality it's completely possible.
Hi Porkchop Flavored Cupcake (My favourite flavour!)

" Especially Sony, who's already losing ground in the pro-cinema segment to the RED 1 camera. "

The RED camera doesn't have the backing of a major company like JVC/Hitachi/Panasonic/etc.

RED can literally come and go anytime. Even with Jannard's billions, the RED camera doesn't have the major industry push.

The reason why I think NIKON has an edge over Canon, is simple: Canon has TOO MUCH TO LOSE if they released a RED competitor. All their other cameras would suffer (read: not sell).

It's like how Sony has been royally screwing the public for years with their crippled cameras and 'incremental updates'. Sony could overnight release the camera everyone wants, but instead they'd rather 'eke it out' as slowly as possible and soak the public for every dollar.

It's stupid. XDCAM is stupid. Why release a 35mbps camera, and then later a 50mbps? Why not just DO IT RIGHT and offer a camera that can shoot at whatever data rate the user wants: PERIOD.

NIKON isn't in the videocamera business, so if they were to release a camera, they would have nothing to lose since it wouldn't compete against any of their other still cameras.

Is it just me, or is Nikon just a few hairs breath from the RED camera? It's totally possible for Nikon to release a lower cost competitor to the RED camera...so why not?

Nikon could possibly make a video camera that shoots at 9-12 MP and easily sell it for under $10K.
Since when do lawyers get to dictate design & aesthetics?

This is one of the more blatant acts of money extortion on part of the lawyers. What will they sue for next? That's there's no tactile keypad which won't work for people with no hands???

No wonder George Bush is trying to put limits to trivial lawsuits. The medical industry is a disaster as a result of this. Doctors can't practice medicine without getting sued every two seconds. The majority of doctors nowadays insist in a series of useless additional/costly procedures just so they won't get sued. The patient of course suffers/agonizes through some of these useless procedures.

Thank you Lawyers!
Since when do lawyers get to dictate the design/aesthetic of a product? If it's a safety issue
that's up to the FDA/FCC/whatever.

This is a blatant act of extortion on part of the lawyers.

No wonder Bush wants to put limits to frivolous lawsuits. The medical industry is a disaster now as a result of lawyers suing doctors every two seconds.
Don't complain. Remember...these are the same Democrats that were voted in by a MAJORITY back in November. The same Dems that
push for personal liberties and yet encroach on them.

Personally, this is a lot of 'same old, same old'. Back in the 50's Elvis was considered worthy of censorship...now the guy is
total Americana. Another 50 years from now GEARS OF WAR will be the "Carl Perkins" of our generation. By then of course
murder will probably be legalized anyways...
As a video editor, this disc would be AMAZING to have. Hard drives crash constantly and I routinely have to keep reloading my footage. Some projects easily go into the 1-2 Terabyte ranges. If I could keep all of my footage backed up onto 5 Blu-Ray Discs and for good measure have duplicates (Which would make it 10).

That in itself would make me take out the 'ole Visa card in a heartbeat.

The days when you literally can take all your favourite movies/music/whatever and place it on a single disc is coming near, and for archive/backup folks in which their lives DEPEND on a format to back it up...200 Gigs is a good beginning.

I now want my 1TB DVD!
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"All of these new nettops have me intrigued. I'm looking for a small, quiet and cheap PC to replace my aging tower in my home office, and all it really needs to do is load Microsoft Office, check email and surf the web. Is there a particular nettop that's better (or a better value) than another? I know it's a rather new segment, but hopefully someone has taken a chance on one already. Thanks!"
