You do realize Sony isn't the ONLY one making BD? Panasonic, LG, Samsung, TDK and some other companies have a hand in making BD right? You do realize as soon as TDK, Sony and other companies start making BD media, the price will drop. Panasonic, LG, Samsung, LG and Sony will all be making PC add ons for Blu Ray drives which will drop pricing. You do know that there are OTHER studios besides Sony making movies? They will all have a say in price point. They want to remain competitive with DVD. Making them 40 will not achieve this because then people would stick with DVDs. Remember they want TO REPLACE DVDS and not co exist with them and having a lower price will achieve that.
Actually I believe Warner, Paramount, Dreamworks and Universal were all on the fence. Each side decided to choose a side while Warner remained on the fence. They made their decision based on sales and potential earnings.
I do realize that people who shop around will find the better deals. The different areas are also an issue. I have seen Americans with better deals than Canadians which gave me such a bias view. Up here we have limited models and most of the cheaper end ones are the 1080i models. I have yet to find a store that will sell me a 1080p HD DVD for under 200, heck I would take one for 250 but all of them are retailing for over 400+.
See I live in Canada and the lowest I have seem them is the Venture model which I think doesn't do 1080p and the D3 which also does not do 1080p which both are under 200. There are different models but I mean seriously Canada SHOULD have the A20.

As soon as Blu Ray is seen as the winner, more companies will make them which will drive the cost down.
I can not people are STILL associating Sony with Blu Ray. Sony is NOT the only company with one but they are the one with the most accessible player in the PS3. Samsung, Sharp, Panasonic all have stand alone players. LG has a hybird player. They probably will not have players below $300 for a while since they are the known companies and will take longer for them to make one. There are other 3rd party companies as stated in another news post who are planning to make the cheaper models. You have to wait for a stand alone if you aren't willing to take the PS3 or the cheaper models.
See the issue is this:

Sub $200 HD DVD players ONLY do 1080i. That is the difference between Blu Ray and HD DVD players. All Blu Ray players are 1080p and nothing but. Meanwhile there are two classes for HD DVD players. The sub $200 ones which only do 1080i or the $400 ones which do 1080p. This is where people do not understand why there aren't sub $200 Blu Ray players on the market yet. Its due to the standards employed by HD DVD. If HD DVD players released only at 1080p, they would all be above $300 like Blu Ray players.

Either case, some Chinese makers are jumping on board with making Blu Ray players which should lower the cost eventually.
Sony made sure this time they won unlike Beta Max. They had support from TONS of companies and had the help of a console to push their format into more homes than before. If this holds true, I wonder how long before Toshiba goes Blu.
Some people do not seem to understand. I do not disagree that digital downloads is the way to go but you do realize the states is LAGGING behind in terms of internet speeds compared to other parts of the world? Most people do not even have a 10 Mbps internet connection and those who can afford them are the rich people.

Read this:
http://www.gearlive.com/index.php/news/article/japan_to_get_major_internet_speed_upgrade/

As you can see, States can not even touch that. You factor in the whole of USA with access to the internet and the amount of people who can afford the speeds to make downloading HD content feasible, it isn't a viable source of income until the speeds go up. So until the States picks up its speeds and make it affordable to the average consumer, downloading content will be all but a pipe dream
I wonder if that price is pre-contract or post-contract. Either ways, that is WAY too expensive for the average user and will not sell well. Hopefully this is nothing but a rumor and when a proper announcement has been made, the price will be at least below 500.
I got a question, is phone the same as the N95 8GB thats suppose to be coming out? There is a page on GSMArena where they have an ALL black 8 GB N95 with all of the features it stated here. 3G, no camera lens and longer battery life. But the difference is this doesn't have the 8 GB internal memory.
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I just moved into a new apartment and have been reading about all of the new power strips out there, especially the green ones. I was wondering if you had any suggestions about which "green "power strips are out there with decent joules ratings. And when I say green, I mean power strips that have the remotes or switches to turn off all electricity flowing to certain plugs and with at least 2 plugs that are always on. I was looking specifically at sub $50 because I will need two, but if that is not possible I could be convinced otherwise. Thanks!"
