Video: Shiny Xbox prototype in Ninja Gaiden II {Xbox 360 Fanboy}

Jun 1st 2008 11:21PM That's not a prototype that was rejected but rather more of a symbol for what the Xbox represented, which was that it was the [direct]Xbox. It was never meant to be a serious contender for the final design of the original Xbox.

Samsung no longer selling flat panels, other wares in Japan {Engadget}

Nov 9th 2007 12:16PM umijin is correct. This is simply a case of most Japanese being more comfortable with their own product brand names. It happens in every country too, U.S. not excluded. Some U.S. citizens won't buy anything other than an American car, or an American appliance, or an American computer (Apple, HP) etc. etc.. It's not necessarily being racist, it's just ingrain in them to buy American, same as the Japanese, Koreans, French, you name it. Home Marketing works wonders on the locals.

Crytek and Epic Games rev their engines {Joystiq}

Jun 22nd 2007 6:20PM @1 " iD has has a pretty long history of not having a lot of people license their engines. The various incarnations of Unreal have been far more successful from that viewpoint."

Let's see what games have used iD engines (not counting iD developed games):

Quake engine (or modifications of the engine):

- Half Life
- Hexen 2
- Take No Prisoners
- Laser Arena
- CIA Operative: Solo Missions
- Urban Mercenary
- Silver Wings

Quake 2 engine (or modifications of the engine):

- Heretic 2
- SiN
- Soldier of Fortune
- Diakatana
- Kingpin: Life of Crime
- Anachronox

Quake 3 engine (or modifications of the engine):

- Star Trek: Voyager Elite Force
- American McGee's Alice
- Heavy Metal: F.A.K.K.
- James Bond 007: Agent Under Fire
- James Bond 007: Everything or Nothing
- Medal of Honor: Allied Assault
- Medal of Honor: Allied Assault - Spearhead
- Medal of Honor: Allied Assault - Breakthrough
- Return to Castle Wolfenstein
- Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory
- Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix
- Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast
- Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy
- Star Trek: Elite Force II
- Call of Duty
- Call of Duty: United Offensive
- Call of Duty 2

Doom engine:

- Hexen
- Heretic
- Strife

Doom 3 engine:

- Quake 4
- Prey
- Enemy Territory: Quake Wars

That's all from just a quick wiki search. I'm sure there's probably more out there and that doesn't count the studios that liscensed the tech from iD and just either didn't use it or some other reason. Seems to me quite a few games we know and love did use a liscensed version of iD-developed engines. Maybe not as many as Unreal powered games but still quite a few.

Is the PS3 in a race against time? {PS3 Fanboy}

Apr 5th 2007 9:49PM Yes, and unlike the PS2 the PS3 isn't facing competition either on the decline (Sega) or not out yet for another year (MS, Nintendo). Nintendo has momentum and appeal to the casuals and MS has mindshare. Oh, and most importantly the PS3 is what the PS2 wasn't, i.e. "expensive", whether the perception is caused by the actual price or by word of mouth. The PS2 didn't start to dominate in it's first year anyway. It took several events to happen for that to transpire. It's faulty logic to use a simplistic analogy which is what comparing the PS3 at this point in it's life to the PS2 is. Of course the system could well end up as popular as the PS2 but while externally the situation appears somewhat vaguely familiar the particulars are totally different.

Warner Bros., Universal, and DCIP to make digital cinema a reality {Engadget}

Mar 6th 2007 7:26PM Well to be fair that grain and flicker can be added in digitally. It's can be improved of course but from everything I've seen it's a convincing effect.

I'm just glad we finally have serious interest being paid to digital cinema. The sooner we can move towards it the better.

Toshiba's second-gen HD-XA2 reviewed {Engadget}

Feb 7th 2007 3:30PM The next-gen disc isn't the problem as the HD DVD drive for the 360 and the PS3 both boot far faster than the standalones. It's the slow cpus that power the standalones that are time intensive. Of course I'm not asking that all machines have videogame quality cpu's and hardware to assist in playback but I think that's the area where they're really skimping on. In the end though does it really matter? Seriously, is it really that much to ask to wait a minute for a movie to start? We do it at the theater all the time so I don't see what the problem is. If you're impatient, go grab a drink or some food while the disc loads. Find some way to pass the time and you won't notice it.

How to beat Gears of War and save $60 {Joystiq}

Feb 7th 2007 1:03PM God I hate people like that. Just rent the damn game already. Stop being a cheap ass. He's not being practical or ingenious and frankly I feel sorry for his wife, if true.

LG's BH100 Blu-ray / HD DVD combo coming February 4th? {Engadget HD}

Jan 15th 2007 1:27PM The player is already out and for sale at certain CompUSA stores. I've seen it in person and if I need to provide pictures, I will. To sum it up, the player doesn't have the HD DVD logo, only plays the discs, and is fairly cheap feeling (more so than the Sammy BD player). It certainly plays the discs though and does a pretty damn good job at it too. I'd actually pick one up had I already not invested in seperate decks for each format. I could care less about the HDi functionality being missing as all it does it make it like a regular DVD player. You can still access menus, you just have to stop the disc to do so. No big deal for such an impressive machine. Regardless I can't recommend it to any one else as most will clamor for the HDi extras and frankly it's a BD player with some HD DVD functionality shoe horned in, which is a bit of a slap in the face to those wanting the most from both formats.

LG's BH100 Blu-ray / HD DVD combo coming February 4th? {Engadget}

Jan 15th 2007 1:07PM Aa I've said in the other thread on this player CompUSA already has them in their stores, for sale. They've had them in since at least last Thursday. I can take pictures if you want. ;)
