Samsung said to be prepping lower cost, education-minded Q1 Ultra {Engadget}
Mar 18th 2008 10:14PM I own a Q1U-XP for about 3 months and I'm pretty happy with my purchase. I use it for reading news and internet surfing. I nestle back in the armchair with my feet up :) I've had maybe around 16, 17 Firefox tabs (and some other in IE) open at the same time and it handles it smoothly. Remember that this device for sure is not a desktop replacement, I use my laptop for emailing and other things that require more typing. Though there is a full-size USB keyboard available for it. I've ordered it but haven't opened it yet so I can't tell you about texting on it. But I find the little split-keyboard extremely practical, almost a necessity when (most of the times in my case) holding the device with two hands. I've used and been ok with the split keyboard for:
- short-cuts like Ctr-D, (I've activated Sticky-keys) Ctrl-W, Ctrl-F, Ctrl-S, Ctrl-N etc
- entering search text in google or for searching in a page
- entering id/passwords for websites
- creating/renaming folders/files.
So if you need to enter a lot of text get the USB keyboard or get a laptop (if you need a big screen). But if you read a lot of e-material and don't want to be chained to your desk then this is a good product. I've never tried to do anything demanding on it, because obviously my laptop is a better choice for that. And i love the 'grab and drag' plugin for Firefox :) lovely, smart implementation!
HP's UMPC 2133 revealed {Engadget}
Feb 19th 2008 4:20PM I prefer my Samsung Q1U's form factor to this. Samsung has found the best form-factor for UMPCs so far. I plug in the USB keyboard when I need it and when I want to lay back in the armchair I take the deivce only. It has a wonderful grip (enough space at the sides) for holding it in two hands. And the little qwerty keyboard is a wonderful addition (from original Q1) because it allows me to enter short texts easily, like web addresses, log in information, searching text, etc. I'm very happy with my Samsung Q1U.

Feb 14th 2008 2:27PM I really hope they pay Xerox and put Graffiti One for text input (along others) on that too. It's a very fast text entry system. It takes a little bit of time to learn but when you learn it but then you can enter text really fast. There was a little program on Palm which measured your speed and I could do 32 words per minute on my Palm.

Jan 31st 2008 8:57PM I've tested Sony-Ericsson's BestPic feature on their K800i cellphone and it's amazing. It takes 9 shots in a second and you can save the ones* which you think 'is the right' moment(s). Is there a stand-alone digital camera that has such a feature? (not 2 or 2.5 shots per second, 9 shots per second).
* On the contrary to a lot of reviews of the device which tell you that you can only save one of the 9, you can actually save many and not just one. And the user-interface puts a little green check-mark to remind you which of the 9 you've already saved!

I own a Samsung Q1U XP and I use keyboard shortcuts a lot! I can't imagine using it without keyboard shortcuts and mouse pointer (I use the pen too sometimes). Computer programs for Windows OS have been designed for and heavily rely on keyboard shortcuts and mouse pointer. Some frequently used examples in my case are: ctrl-c, ctrl-v, ctrl-a, ctrl-f, F11, space (scrolling), shift-space, page down/up, ESC, alt-tab, ctr-tab, shift-click, etc. So if I were using this machine (and a lot of other newly announced UMPCs) I had to keep the slider open all the time. So if it's going to be open all the time why sliding.
