Never having used the MSI wind, I can't say if software wise it's better or not, but i have taken one apart. The 901 is clearly the better box for hardware modding. Lots more room and lots more unused internal USB ports (At least 4, I think there are 6 due to the architecture of the chip, but I know of 4) If you have one of the eee's that does not come with bluetooth you have 5, if you have no camera you've got 6. Easy to access, and easy to mod.
Back when I got my g5 x-serve it was not on the education site either. I just ordered it from the mac store on campus and it came in just fine.

I bet you can still do that.

I bought an old 12" ibook used that originated from the Kansas school system (they sell the laptops used after a few years). It had a hot foil stamp saying it was their property on the back bonded hard to the plastic. Nothing could get rid of that. Well a can of Fusion red spray paint did, but that was not to hide that logo, that was to make my laptop colorful. http://www.gregorycohen.com/redibook.jpg

Big deal, Tallahassee, Florida has had these for years and years.

We converted as bulbs burned out. They started with Red (They went first) then Green, lastly yellow. There are still some yellow traditional bulbs around town, but I'm sure those will go soon.

I went out to CA to test driven one of these. They suck.

The third headlight is there because this thing is legally a motorcycle (keeps them from needing to have it crash tested, or have airbags, or have a lot of stuff). Now I love electric cars, and this is not only underpowered, but poorly designed.

The things that jump out at me first is that there is no room on the left of the break peddle for your left foot. I had to put my left foot under my right to fit. Your knees are in effect your front bumper padding (just like the old VW vans). and the rear view mirror shakes to the point you can't see out of it.

This does not even point out the horror of the rest of the ergonomics including the on/off switch is located between your legs on the front bottom of the drivers seat so you have to get out of the car to turn it on.

There may be cool electric solutions, this is not it.

I've driven golf carts that are faster and easier to drive.

our shop runs on nothing but macs. One of my employees in frustration while trying to teach a employee to use the macs named it the "Puppy paw key", as he saw it as a stylized puppy foot print.

His medications are making him feel better now ...
You know, my town had one of these stores back the first time. I went in to get a computer, I needed a server replacement. They had nothing, so I left, went to best buy and bought a machine that was a fine stop-gap.

They did not even have cables there. Who would ever wait on the delivery of a cable.
At one point, our server died, and I replaced it with a mini-mac I had. I loaded OSX 10.3, and went to town. This thing rocked. It worked great, I used an external drive, not trusting the internal one (it is a laptop drive after all), and because the internal one is sloooow (5400rpm). It worked fine for the 6 weeks we used it, never a crash, never a problem. Not as fast as our X-serve that replaced it, but it's not fair to compare a duel G5 with a G4. In any event, I even had a 9" LCD touch screen on top of it for use in the server room. The little monitor was just to scale for the CPU, and the touch screen solve the issue of where to put a mouse in a server room. It ran my buisness, e-mail and everything else just fine. I now keep one as an emergancy machine in case our new server goes out. For $500, you may be a little slow, but we would still be live. -GReg
At last. I have been keeping an old laptop running OS 9 for when I need to work on my old version of Fontographer. -GReg
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I am looking for a 12- or 13-inch ultraportable that can also play modern games at a reasonable level, for less than $1,000. I know the brainiacs out there can help me out. Love the site, thanks!"
