Intel discusses ATI and Nvidia killing Larrabee, launching as early as 2009 {Engadget}

Aug 4th 2008 11:36AM I'd like to hear what kind of memory architecture that Intel has come up with that allows them to scale linearly from 8 to 48 cores. Unless each of the cores has it's own dedicated memory or they're working some incredible magic with the memory controllers, I call BS.

Mobile Edge intros TSA-approved ScanFast laptop bags {Engadget}

Jul 18th 2008 1:13PM Scenario 1: By some miracle, the TSA agents recognize that you have a TSA approved bag and they let it through. The 10 people behind you see this and assume their bags are OK too then they argue when the security guy hassles them over their laptops. The line gets held up why the TSA agents try to explain about "TSA approved" bags and what makes them so special compared to regular bags.

Scenario 2: All of the bags, approved or not, look the same: black, rectangular nylon cases. The TSA agent decides it's easiest to just make everyone take out their laptops. You try to tell him that there is an "approved" logo stitched into some obscure corner of the bag, which he refuses to bother himself to look for. So out comes your laptop.

Scenario 3: TSA agent gets tired of trying to tell the difference between the two kinds and arguing with the people in line, so he lets them all through.

Sony cutting 80GB PS3 price to $400 in September, ditching backwards compatibility {Engadget}

Jul 15th 2008 4:41PM Just one thing to note: wireless adds extra latency, especially if it is encrypted. Gamers really should avoid it if possible.

Offshore wind power park to energize Delaware homes {Engadget}

Jun 24th 2008 12:42PM I live in Ohio in a 2,500 sq. ft. home and my bill comes out to less than $100/month in the summer, half that in the winter. This is with quite a bit of computer equipment (at least 3 machines, network storage, wireless router, etc) running 24x7, plus the extra fee for "green" sourced electricity. I have gas heating and cooking. If we assume that most houses in Maryland make use of gas for cooking and heating, and that 50,000 home figure is for Maryland, then

50,000homes * 12mo/yr * 25yr * $100/mo/home < 1.6 billion

But on the other hand, it's a pretty safe bet that coal generated electricity will go up in price in the next 25 years, and the wind farm will gain a price advantage during that time.

The iPhone 3G on AT&T: we ask the burning questions {Engadget}

Jun 10th 2008 11:23AM You do realize that every other subsidized phone out there will have a contract requirement, so what makes this such a bad deal compared to other phones?

On another note: Last year, when the iPhone was released, the other manufacturers went scrambling to push out new and innovative phones, which have been trickling to market since. And now that the iPhone is $200, all of the other smartphones will be scrambling to slash prices. It sounds like a win for consumers, whether they like iPhones or other phones. We should be applauding Apple for adding competition and innovation to the smartphone market.

Sizing it up: iPhone 3G vs. the rest {Engadget}

Jun 9th 2008 3:59PM @Warren

Everyone has an iPhone, so you buy a HTC Touch. Everyone has a PC so you buy a Mac. Everyone has a BMW so you buy an Audi. What happens when you are all alone in your house and no one is there to define who you are?

I hope that you will one day start to measure yourself by your own goals and expectations, rather than living your life in comparison to others. I know, sounds like some after school special, but seriously, your comment makes you sound like you never matured past high school.

iPhone 3G is finally official, starts at $199, available July 11th {Engadget}

Jun 9th 2008 3:15PM The most important technology that I saw in the WWDC presentation was the "me" Web 2.0 based online desktop. If they've managed to make a portable desktop that is always synchronized and accessible from anywhere (PC, Mac, the web, and your iPhone), then that's a big step up from Microsoft's cumbersome Outlook Exchanged based system.

Jun 9th 2008 3:05PM Better signal reception? I've read that Macbooks have better WiFi range due to the aluminum in the Macbook Pro's blocking the signal.

Apple patents systems to warn of impending dropped calls, track down your keys {Engadget}

May 29th 2008 1:04PM Awesome idea! What should this be called? Hmm, I know... we'll call it the "iSignal Strength Indicator"! And we'll let users know how strong the signal is by drawing different sized bars on the screen, and what else, oh yeah, we'll just have to go back in time and destroy every cell phone ever made so that there isn't any prior art covering this invention. Yeah, totally new idea!

Zune to hit Canada in May with a smaller lineup? {Engadget}

May 1st 2008 10:58AM My local Target liquidated their Zune stock with a 50% off clearance. The Canadians should've just crossed the border and gotten one in the US if they wanted one.
