so this is defiantely linux, right? it sounds like it, though i dont know what "archos-specific version of the opera browser" means. does that mean its linux opera with an archos logo on it? i wonder how open it will be, homebrew apps are a must for this thing.
before people start homebrewing and hacking, lets get the important stuff outta the way: case modding! i can see myself buying one of these, i was gonna get a gp2x, but this has goofys loco coconuts and that sounds funny.
mac fanboys: your operating system is what happens when unix has an illegitimate child with a bloodsucking capatalist whore with white earbuds.

windows fanboys: the plot of halo is shooting aliens with a gun, nothing new. i am also sick of you asking me how to "make my PC uber fast!" and "fix this thing! its on crack or sumthin, its broke!" burning money and beating yourself with a bag of hammers is a good alternative to windows, it looks a lot nicer too.

GNU!
umm, thats not realy the question at all. nobody has manged at all to "beat" any ipod, regardless of superior specs, price, and design. not to mention archos hasn't had any giant success to secure their name with your average shopper, only those who shop around know about their supperior products. so to answer your question, will the archos 404 beat the touchscreen ipod? no, no it wont. i am willing to bet it is better, but beaten.
so why post about it? really, why? you are a failure.
So does this thing play video? im still not sure. So will this definately support linux? Im guessing it does, connectivity seems to be a big selling point.
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I'm pretty much a complete noob when it comes to camera stuff. My wife loves to take pictures, though. So much so that she literally wore out her first point and shoot camera, and the Kodak Z712 I bought for her less than two years ago is starting to act up as well. To compound the matter, we are expecting our first born sometime next year. I fear the Kodak just isn't going to cut it any longer. What would be the best starter DSLR to get? She hates missing photo opportunities due to camera 'lag' so speed would definitely be at the top of the list. Photo quality and features would be next. Price should be no more than $800. I'm not interested in video capabilities."
