Just look at AT&T and their hold over radio that started way before anyone who reads engadget was born. In short, it led to the destruction of radio as an open medium (very similar to what the telecoms industry is attempting to do to the internet today.) Not to mention that it put off the television by 20 years or so because it was fat and happy controlling radio.
