Editorial: Taking the iPhone 3GS off the job market {Engadget}

Jul 10th 2009 8:59PM I'm a guy in new media who needs to get things done. I should be part of Apple's target market.

Uh, why? That seems like a pretty tiny market to me.

What's up with the iPhone Carrier Update? {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Feb 7th 2009 2:05PM Yes, I meant Jon, of course. Thanks for noting that!

Feb 7th 2009 1:08PM James: "Why should the end-user have to pay extra to cover AT&T's deficiencies?" Who else is going to pay for it? Seriously, where do you think AT&T gets the money to build out its network?

Look, in all seriousness, I have a little bit of experience in this area. Wireless coverage is subject to the 90/10 rule in the worst kind of way. That is, the vast majority of coverage is easy, but taking out those nulls and holes is a major pain. You could easily double or triple your network costs just to fill in those few holes---and of course, those costs are passed on to every single subscriber. That's assuming that it's even *possible* to fill the holes; after all, AT&T can't put up a cel tower anywhere it wants to.

At some point it just makes fiscal sense to accept imperfections in the network. And I think that the subscribers to any cel phone network would agree, if they understood what it would cost them to absorb the necessary network upgrades to broaden coverage or fill in holes.

I'm not trying to justify specific AT&T practices, like downgrading its 2G service as it ramps up its 3G service, etc. But I think it's important to be realistic and note that wireless coverage can never be perfect in a cost-constrained system.

Working with a robot: Drobo in action {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Jan 30th 2009 8:34PM You know if you're gonna try and be an asshole you'd better have your facts straight first.

For one thing: "the only problem was a typo." Well, that typo happens to imply that the very technique he was using to eject and disconnect his Drobo was acceptable practice. In wasn't "a" typo, it was, for him, "the" typo.

And yet, if you had read the *comments*, you would know that it wasn't, in fact, a typo. According to the Director of Customer Service, who posted on that thread, "The procedure you followed for shutting down the Drobo system without a Dashboard running is correct. The procedure you followed for shutting down the Drobo system without a Dashboard running is correct. Un-mounting the Drobo and pulling the interface cable is correct, and should not be a problem. I have clarified this with my support staff to insure this is communicated properly. I will contact you tomorrow to further understand what happen to your Drobo and resolve your issue." Oh yes, and even the CEO of Data Robotics posted to emphasize the point. (Both of these messages were posted well before you posted yours.)

In other words, Fraser Spiers' gripe is, according to the best information we have, entirely legitimate.

Illusion Labs wants you to Sway with them {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Jan 20th 2009 8:23AM I can see the merit in that, but as someone who doesn't play console or PC games I worry that reviews from an expert gamer might not be as helpful to me.

SDXC memory cards promise 2TB of storage, 300MBps transfer {Engadget}

Jan 7th 2009 11:05AM Bah, you guys are being suckered in by the marketing hype. I am sure the 2TB number simply refers to the size of the address space. It's a theoretical maximum, yes. But no you are not going to see a 2TB SDXC card any time soon.

Dec 7th 2008 8:17PM The fact that Dan Fellini is willing to pay $20 for a part he thinks ought to be $8 means... that Apple is right and Dan is wrong. Now if Dan refused to pay $20 for a part he things ought to be $8... that might be evidence he's right.

New MacBook Pro benchmarked within Boot Camp {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Nov 19th 2008 3:35PM Well, since most of the GPU-intensive games are Windows-only, and since virtualization solutions tend not to have full DirectX support, the only way to fully exercise GPU hardware is through the use of BootCamp.
