USB 3.0 data transfer demonstrated at IDF {Engadget}

Aug 21st 2008 9:22AM So...if someone were to make a CF card capable of that speed, we'd be talking about transferring a 2gb card in about six seconds?

eMachines bores us to tears, burns our eyes with cheap new desktops {Engadget}

Jul 2nd 2008 6:39PM My parents picked up an eMachines bundle - computer, monitor, etc. for $249 at CompUSA about a year and a half ago; possibly longer. There hasn't been a single problem with it yet, and it even runs whisper quiet. However, it did come bundled with XP, which may have helped.

Microsoft, then and now {Engadget}

Jun 26th 2008 10:46AM So you're a multi-billion dollar company looking for a group portrait for a somewhat historic "then and now" company picture...and you hire some guy with a single light to line you up against a black backdrop and take one of the most poorly lit photographs ever?

Bravo, Microsoft.

Scientists create mutant bugs that produce crude oil, unleash swarm of merciless killers {Engadget}

Jun 16th 2008 3:02PM Here's where I'm pessimistic:
My good ole US of A uses, on average, 20 million barrels of oil per day. 20,000,000 barrels per day. That's over 7 TRILLION barrels a year - and only for one country.

How much wood, sugarcane, etc. would it take to make one barrel - and in how much time? Obviously I don't know the answer to that, but I can't help but believe that we'd just be quickly destroying other resources just to keep pumping out oil. As someone else posted, it seems like the real solution is to focus more on alternative fuel sources, instead of just gunning for more oil.

Staples to stock Flexplay self-destructing DVDs {Engadget}

Jun 2nd 2008 10:57AM So with gas at over $4 a gallon and oil prices generally rising steadily, our solution is to create yet another non-recyclable, completely unnecessary "disposable movie" to waste more oil and keep the prices rising?

Blockbuster, Netflix, et al for the win.

Napster unleashes a-la-carte, DRM-free MP3 store {Engadget}

May 20th 2008 11:04AM Subscribers, aka those who sign up for a monthly flat rate "all you can eat" plan, have DRM.

People who buy the tunes a-la-carte, aka one song at a time for a set price per song, get the track DRM-free.

Verizon expands FiOS TV coverage in New York (again) {Engadget HD}

May 5th 2008 12:02PM Here in Rochester, we still don't have access to any Verizon services other than cell phones. Probably isn't going to change in the next few years, either.

Windows XP SP3 now available... just kidding {Engadget}

Apr 29th 2008 9:30AM I haven't had any problems with XP2...why would I want this?

The nuts and bolts of buying a vanilla digital TV {Engadget HD}

Apr 20th 2008 5:03PM If you went out to buy a computer, you ask yourself, ‘Do I want a laptop? A desktop? How much RAM do I want? How much memory?’

Apparently, consumers ask themselves the same questions twice in a row.

eMachines launches two new desktops, puts your pennies into play {Engadget}

Apr 17th 2008 11:59AM My parents bought an eMachines computer (T5048) for $250 about a year and a half ago, and there hasn't been a single problem with it so far. It came with XPMC installed on it, and I ordered the Vista upgrade for them when it was available - but they haven't installed it, since there's no need to.

But for $250, it's got all the power you need to handle your basic internet tasks, plus my mom uses Photoshop all the time without problems. Knock 'em if you want, but I think they got a terrific deal.
