Okay, there are two things in your post.
I'd use the external to actually back up my MacBook. I had another drive, but I kind of overloaded it when I decided to partition it into two halves. Oops.

And the last disc I burned was a CD full of my engagement pictures.
It checks e-mail while it's locked/asleep -- you just have to change your settings to have it download e-mail every 15, 30, or 60 minutes.
