Next generation Xbox 360 with built-in Blu-ray coming in 2008? {Engadget}
Apr 1st 2008 7:05AM Rayza game for game the 360 blows the PS3 out of the water. As a media device they are even. As a next gen optical format player the PS3 wins with it's Blu Ray capabilities. Both consoles can also do 1080p.
As far as the motion stuff goes, it is pretty much useless. If I play a game with the option for motion controls 9 out of 10 times I turn them off, as the games are more fun without.
On topic though I hope MS just releases a Blu Ray add-on, not a new console with Blu Ray built in. If the drive is built in there will be a point where someone will make a game that needs the Blu Ray drive, which will effectively rule out the majority of owners from playing it. They need to stick it out with DVD for the rest of the 360's life cycle and then with the next Xbox slap a Blu Ray drive in it and call it a day.
PS3 firmware 2.20 bringing BD-Live interactive Blu-ray this month {Engadget}
Mar 20th 2008 11:19AM "Sadly, the current PS3 chipset can't handle DTS-HD MA. Even if it did, it would be a converted PCM stream. That's the way PS3 handles Dolby TrueHD now and the reason why a 6.9Mb TrueHD track sounds worse than a 640kb DD track. I hope they release a new PS3 with an updated chipset to handle the new audio formats. The PS3 is a sadly crippled Blu-ray player without it.
JET"
The PS3 should be more than capable of decoding DTS HD MA with no problem. They just need to get it figured out. The processor in the PS3 is more powerful than the processor in any other Blu Ray player, so why couldn't it?
You also have the rest of your facts messed up man, plain and simple. The only way that True HD and Uncompressed PCM will sound worse than Dobly Digital is if you don't have the proper set-up and then it's still debatable. The PS3 sends the audio out in a Linear PCM stream, meaning it is completely decoded when it is sent to the receiver. If your receiver supports LPCM through HDMI then the receiver simply sends the sounds to the speakers, all the decoding of the audio is done in the PS3. This is the same result as a receiver decoding the audio and outputting the sound.
Netflix switching queued HD DVDs to DVDs? {Engadget HD}
Feb 26th 2008 2:56PM I had Beowulf in my queue and as of yesterday it was HD DVD with a long wait. As of this afternoon it was DVD with a wait.
So they seem to have gotten the HD DVD of this movie in, but are no longer going to offer it now.

Poll: What impact could Warner have? {Engadget HD}
Dec 17th 2007 4:39PM I really think Warner will go red if they go one way or the other. The fact red has more dedicated players in the market for one is a big deal. The fact red has a finalized spec that allows for teh advanced features Warner has been using all the time on HD DVD, not to mention internet access on every player. Warner is one of the studios that has taken advantage of the advanced features from teh start, including internet, so I can't see them going Blu exclusive when it would be a step back in interactivity.
Warner just seems to favor HD DVD at this time. I personally hope they go red, but we will see. Overall it isn't going to hurt me much as I am a purple supporter, but I favor HD DVD if I have the choice.
Opera files EU antitrust suit against Microsoft for bundling IE {Engadget}
Dec 13th 2007 10:30AM On my home PC I use Firefox strictly and will continue to do so. I have tried Opera in the past and was not a fan.
That said I think this is stupid. Like many have said if MS unbundles IE from Windows this is going to cause the average PC user, read those who don't have a clue what FTP is, to not have internet access. These people are going to be mad because something they thought should be on their PC was missing.
I think if this case is won, which from the way the EU rules against MS most of the time it will be won, MS should bundle IE and Firefox with their browser. That way they are bundling more than one and Opera still gets nothing out of it.

Wii to drop MP3 support, add AAC in Photo Channel update {Engadget}
Nov 14th 2007 7:57AM Nintendo may have never promoted the Wii as a media hub or anything like that, but they did say there would be some custom soundtrack support. At least one first party game even supports it, Excite Truck, and believe me when I say custom soundtracks helped.
That is where removing MP3 support will hurt most people. This isn't about just listening to MP3s on your Wii, it's about losing the ability to easily use custom soundtracks. Face it more people have MP3 tracks than AAC.
Even taking away the reasoning of custom soundtrack support, the fact is removing features is generally a bad thing. Also of note, the people saying your Wii supports it already, just don't update. You also make the point Nintendo already paid the licensing fee for these consoles, so why take away something that has already been paid for? Why not just remove it from future consoles?
Transformers HD DVD review roundup {Engadget HD}
Oct 15th 2007 3:58PM For the record this disc does have high resolution audio. The soundtrack included is Dolby Digital Plus, which runs at 1509 kb/s compared to Dolby Digital running at 640kb/s or even 448kb/s.
What the disc is missing is lossless audio such as Dolby True HD. I am not bothered by this as this is sounding like a top notch soundtrack no matter what.
