Zune review {Engadget}
Nov 15th 2006 3:24PM Austin,
If you read my comment in "threaded" view, you'll see that I was replying to Will's earlier comment that it doesn't have an EQ at all. When I wrote my response, I had not yet seen your comment.

Nov 15th 2006 3:13PM Actually, there is an equalizer. Go under settings --> music --> equalizer. There are 7 presets like "rock," "jazz," etc. to choose from. I haven't messed with that, and in all likelihood I never will. I wonder if you can set specific albums to play on specific EQ settings? If so, that'd be useful. If not, I can't be bothered to change the EQ settings to fit the band I'm listening to.
What would be nice is if the PC interface would allow you to make custom EQ presets then load them onto the Zune itself.

While charging, were you playing from the Zune software on your PC, or from the Zune itself? I could play through the PC interface while charging, but the Zune itself was locked down while connected.

Nov 15th 2006 2:56PM Christ, could morons like Sy POSSIBLY give it up with the "hurrrrrrrrr any positive comments must be Microsoft plants" comments? So only the negative comments from people who have neither touched nor owned a Zune are genuine?Is it so inconceivable that there are people out there who actually bought a Zune and actually like it?
Guess what, I'm one of them. My Zune is sitting in my desk drawer here at work waiting to be used once I'm off. I got it last night, brought it home, installed it, sync'd existing media, entered my 14-day subscription code, and downloaded a bunch of stuff from the Marketplace.
I haven't had a chance to use it extensively, but the time I did spend with it was good. I can't tell whether it's new-gadget-happiness or whether I really am satisfied, but time will tell. My biggest problem is that I have owned PMPs in the past and all of them were underused. I'm sure this one will be as well, especially given its size. I currently have a 4 gig Nano and a 1 gig 1st-gen shuffle, and the shuffle gets the most use since it's simple, sturdy, and great for going running.
One thing I want to check out is how much interoperability it has with my Xbox 360. I'm guessing it'll be underwhelming, but hoping that the 360's video download capabilities will be Zune integrated in some way.

Nov 14th 2006 4:40PM Guess what? People really do buy things with their buddies. It happens all the time. I bought my Xbox 360 with a friend, for example. When a gadget like this has a defined release date, a lot of people plan ahead to be there at the store when it opens. I find it funny that you find it hard to believe that two friends might both want the same thing, and might get it on release day. I've been doing that with my cell phones forever (the latest being the Blackberry Pearl).
I've been in the "this is interesting, I'll keep my eye on it" camp since the Zune story broke. Personally I'll be going to Best Buy on my way home from work to have a look. If I like it, I intend to buy one (probably black/blue). I think there are too many pre-teens on this site with zero income who find it incomprehensible that someone might drop $250 on a whim.
Bring on the conspiracy theories about how I'm a Microsoft drone working at some super-secret complex whose sole function is to browse message boards and post thinly-veiled enthusiastic comments about MS products.

Good God.

Sep 6th 2006 4:35PM The penny idea is genius? What's to stop ANYONE from dumping ten, a hundred, or a thousand pennies into the box of their choice? I can't really even begin to imagine a less secure, more corruptible system. Maybe they should just have a big chalkboard and you go behind a curtain and make a mark next to the candidate of your choice -- I'm sure everyone will be honest.
