More research asserts that Blu-ray adoption isn't apt to surge soon {Engadget HD}

May 14th 2008 5:45PM NFINITY,

Do you seriously think that the BDA and Sony have a conspiracy of offering overpriced movies to the masses just to shoot themselves in the foot? It's narrowminded not to consider the business side of this new format. There was a lot of R&D, and yes, as is the case with EVERY other new technology, early adopter recoup their costs.
Despite everything you and other BD haters write, prices are right where they should be, and are cheaper than DVD players were in it's comparable lifespan.

And stop using the PS3 as an example of subsidizing... its normal for game consoles to do this. Toshiba, unless it was planning on being the sole manufacturer of HD DVD players, would not have been able to sustain the firesale prices it was offering as as a desperate last ditch effort... and even if, movie prices for HD DVD's were NEVER cheaper than BD's until HD DVD lost, despite the so-called cost advantage of going with HD DVD.

Anyhow, all this HD DVD talk is all moot now. Point is BD is still much in the game despite all the FUD about it.

That was a very intelligent post and a great example. I agree that if BD ends up a niche product, so be it. I prefer to pay $35 for a movie I truly want on BD and know it will be of the utmost quality, than get cheap $5 HD lite movies and players that just barely meet the most minimal HD specs.

Is this your next prediction? Seriously, you need to watch what you say after all the egg you and lie spreader had on your faces after the format war.

DL's will compete with Netflix et. al. as an alternative to mailed disc rentals. Movie buyers and collectors will still be buying discs 2 years from now, and beyond

If there wasn't a market for actual movie buyers, DVD would never have succeeded. Marketplace is a GREAT service and convenient for HD rentals, and I DO think it will enjoy success. But again, different markets.

Movie DL's to own in HD, with all the extras, and not compressed to shit are dependent on HDD storage solutions, which needs a reliable hardware solution that is cheap and will be adopted by the masses. I just don't see this happening for at least another 5-7 years.

May 14th 2008 5:12PM @ NFINITY,

Same question someone else posed. Do you think it would have been any different with HD DVD? You have to be mad to believe that Toshiba would have continued to subsidize their hardware at firesale prices.

FFS, anyone who expects a new technology to nosedive in hardware and media prices is just ignorant and naive.

I was the first from my circle of friends to own a DVD player. They didn't run out and buy one right away because they couldn't afford it, or weren't willing to shell out $379 for a player. They knew what it was though, and they definitely wanted one. And that's what matters. Getting folks to WANT it is what counts. They WANT now, they feel they have to have it, they find a way of obtaining it. Maybe 6mos, maybe a year from now. Mass adoption doesn't happen overnight.

And it's not to say that BD most definitely WILL enjoy mass adoption cause it could very well end up a niche format. But time is still on BD's side. It's still too early to call it.

May 14th 2008 4:47PM Nfinity is right. Samples continue to be used as a reliable method for statistical studies. No they aren't 100% accurate, but they are reliable enough to serve as an indicator of the general public interest.

It hurt me to agree with Nfinity.

For all that BS you wrote, it still amounts to THEFT.

Just answer one question you hypocrite, why did you BUY HD DVD movies?
