Want want want.
Did you really say that the Sony Alpha is giving Canon stiff competition? Cleary you have not seen their sales figures. It is one of the hardest to sell DSLRs on the market and only really being bought by people who have KM lenses already.
ideal for rapid shot modes on DSLRs

Um.... what DSLR supports the memory stick? Not even the Alpha takes this horrible memory card design.
Olympus 8MP Evolt E-500 w/ 2 lenses (refurb) for $499 w/ free shipping

I don't think you'll see any dslr's w/ lenses for cheaper then that.
Atari 2600, perhaps my Colecovision, but it has been on the fritz lately.
There are a number of p&s cameras on the market with zooms longer then 3x, including Fuji, which offers a 10x optical zoom.

The trade-off is size. There is no way currently to have an uber thin camera with a longer then 3x zoom. For now, the MP race seems to be over and it is more on form, functions and details. These include super thin, water-proof, long zoom, drop-proof, etc. It is a matter of picking a camera with features and functions that you will use in your life, not just on the MP.

In the case of this latest release from Fuji, it would make a great camera for new parents, who are carrying a ton of bags and trying to keep the kids under control, possibly dropping a thing or two, or for someone who enjoys to go mountain biking and likes to take a camera along with them but is afraid of the dust and possible impact dammage from falling.
Ya-Who?

Seriously, who uses yahoo anymore for searches? They've boogered up the index of the site with so much crap, its a pain to actually use the search engine. The google empire and the term "google" have become such a part of Americana that I don't see how this is really going to make people switch. You can often hear people talk about "googling" this or that on popular TV shows and live talk shows (TV and radio), you never hear of someone yahoo-ing.

Google has done things right and branded the term "search engine" with their own name, much in the way that you are more likely to hear someone ask to pass the box of Kleenex, not pass the facial tissues.
There are some really cool rainy day projects on there, and the RSS feed for it makes it that much easier to keep track of new stuff via my google homepage!

Thanks!

"I'm pretty much a complete noob when it comes to camera stuff. My wife loves to take pictures, though. So much so that she literally wore out her first point and shoot camera, and the Kodak Z712 I bought for her less than two years ago is starting to act up as well. To compound the matter, we are expecting our first born sometime next year. I fear the Kodak just isn't going to cut it any longer. What would be the best starter DSLR to get? She hates missing photo opportunities due to camera 'lag' so speed would definitely be at the top of the list. Photo quality and features would be next. Price should be no more than $800. I'm not interested in video capabilities."
