Meraki promises free, citywide WiFi network for San Francisco {Engadget}

Jan 4th 2008 2:50PM Whoop-d'freaking-doo. My brother uses the metro wifi in Portland and it's oversaturated to the point where his connection will drop to dial-up speeds or lower.

I don't see public wifi really catching on for two reasons:

1. If public wifi was really usuable and a worthy alternative, the major players would squash it with all the legal mustard they could muster for cutting into their profits.

2. By the time internet home is cheap enough for said "major players" to not care so much, even your most destitute netizen would prefer to pay a dollar a month to use slightly-more-secure private internet than a public network.

Samsung's M110 "Solid" phone is rugged, boring {Engadget}

Jan 4th 2008 11:58AM Meh, my old school Nokia 3xxx took a tumble down two flights of concrete stairs and landed in a puddle in the rain. Not only was there not a scratch on it, but the person I was speaking to on the other end was still there and wondering what the hell had caused all that noise.

THAT was an ultra durable phone.

CompactFlash Association showing off CF card with SATA interface {Engadget}

Jan 4th 2008 11:47AM Awesome, so when it comes time to upgrade my webserver again, I can toss a cf card into the SATA slot instead of the power sucking hard disk.

Energy efficient FTW.

Pink Centro coming to Sprint early next year? {Engadget}

Dec 31st 2007 1:49PM I'm aghast. I thought the Centro couldn't be any uglier when it was first announced...

The designer for this phone must truly exist in some perceptually inverted universe where pink is the new black and ugly is the new sexy.

Taiwanese solar car may not appeal to the fashion conscious {Engadget}

Dec 31st 2007 1:45PM Something with those specs would be perfect for my d2d commute. Then I only need to roll out my Jetta when I roadtrip. No more weekly re-fueling stops FTW.

P2i's Ion-Mask coating could make waterproof phones an everyday occurrence {Engadget}

Dec 31st 2007 12:43PM Hey, if tables can have joins (both inner and outer), then why not devices too?

Angry drivers torching traffic cameras in England {Engadget}

Dec 27th 2007 12:12PM @ Wwhat

Some people actively DO obey the speed limit, but bravo for pulling a completely fictitious statistic out of your @$$ like that.

Obeying the set speed limit reduces wear on your vehicle, decreases the chance of a high-speed accident, and increases fuel-efficiency. The semi-intelligent drivers (of which you are clearly not a member of) who realize this CHOOSE to obey the speed limit.

UPOP "PMP" treads dangerously close to UMPC territory {Engadget}

Dec 11th 2007 2:40PM I'm pretty sure the screen is photoshopped. That looks like a Windows XP theme (which, unless things have REALLY changed, the CE version of Windows can't use) and the icons for Office 2007 also raise my photoshopped-o-meter.

NVIDIA reveals GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB {Engadget}

Dec 11th 2007 11:58AM Okay, I don't get the dorky remark. The article lists the tech specs of the card, which is what I'd find on the side of the retail packaging, the Newegg page, NVIDIA's site, etc....

Now, if I could dump out my spare parts tubs, grab my soldering pen, and create this card from the ground up out of loose parts, bits of wire, bubble gum, and little pieces of paper (Brak FTW), THEN I would be treading mighty heavily on the land of the dork.

Hands-on with BetaBlue, JetBlue's WiFi-equipped Airbus {Engadget}

Dec 11th 2007 11:33AM For the 10th time to-the-nth-power, anyone who thinks that wifi on an airplane is going to be able to support online gaming (at least real-time, low latency gaming like most MMORPG's) or VoiP truly doesn't understand the technology.

Commercial aircraft internet would more than support instant messaging, email, and internet browsing, but with the technology that exists the latency would be TERRIBLE, probably upwards of 1000ms or greater, leaving it worthless for any real-time application.

For you WoW'ers, you know that playing WoW with a latency of 450ms or higher blows, and at anything over 300ms your instant-cast spells aren't so instant.

The good news is that we won't have to worry about 15-yo girls dragging their laptops onto the flight to skype their friends non-stop in the seat right behind you.

The bad news is that we won't be playing WoW or EVE during our flights anytime soon.

LAN gaming INSIDE the aircraft wouldn't be out of the question though.....

>jump to Scrubs-type imagination flash<

Stands and turns to the rest of coach...."does anyone else have a gaming laptop and FEAR or CRYSIS installed? You do sir? I could crush you. Oh yeah? I'll believe it when you frag it motha-f****. Oh, it's on now." Sits down and gets owned in the face in MP.
