Don't get all this "how Orwellian" shit. You do all realise people were already watching the cameras don't you? They're not there for show. How is the fact that the cameras have speakers attached more of a privacy issue? If anything it's less of one because it makes you aware you're being watched. As for CCTV in general that's a whole other argument.
It's a sign of good marketing and design when, just like the iPod and the Sony Walkman NW-A3000, I am tempted to buy this even though it doesn't do what I want (gapless, ogg, 20 or 30gb drive). Unfortunately for Sandisk I am able to exercise a little restraint; still good going though!
This used to happen all the time before chip and pin (and is still prevalent now). It's why you're asked to look for signs of tampering on ATMs. Basically the thief places a card reader in front of the slot and points a camera at the keypad to film you entering the pin. The information from the card reader is then collected and transferred to a phone card which can then be used in any ATM. Of course chip and pin makes it more difficult with more and more ATMs checking the chip as well as the magnetic strip, which is why in this case the crooks went abroad, but you could probably still work it in the UK if you wanted. Old news.
Thought I'd just add some more kind words about the Exilim range. I also own an EX-S500 and it's really great. Battery life is fantsastic as has already been mentioned. The screen is always visible, good button layout, easy menus, and above all takes good photos. Slim as an ice cube's chances in hell too; it's nice and easy to carry around in your pocket which can be very useful when you're on holiday and don't want to have to lug around conspicously valuable hunks of gadget.
I'm so sick of all this crap about catching "real criminals". If you don't pay your taxes, you are a real criminal. It's like people who complain about speed cameras; there's an easy way not to get caught out: DON'T BREAK THE LAW. I'll admit that even I speed, but because I feel pressured to by other drivers who insist on getting right up my arse. I'm sure there are plenty others out there who only speed for precisely the same reason. If everyone just slowed down a little there would be no problem. Why is everyone in such a hurry anyway?
"Sweet jesus, let's hope you don't go on vacation for 2 weeks after forgetting to pay your car tax!" Then don't forget.
@36 if you don't like it then leave. We pay taxes to fund the NHS not because it'll nescessarily pay off for every one of us in the long run, but to help those who genuinely can't pay for it, as opposed to those who can afford it but bitch about it anyway.
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"All of these new nettops have me intrigued. I'm looking for a small, quiet and cheap PC to replace my aging tower in my home office, and all it really needs to do is load Microsoft Office, check email and surf the web. Is there a particular nettop that's better (or a better value) than another? I know it's a rather new segment, but hopefully someone has taken a chance on one already. Thanks!"
