Facebook app developer rejects App Store, irony ensues {Engadget}

Nov 12th 2009 12:09PM It's important to note that part of Mac's relative success is due to it's ability to offer the most commonly used software for office and creative use. It's a great OS, but it's not worth squat if it doesn't satisfy the basic needs of its customers. Alienating developers, either on the Mac or iPhone, is a bad idea, and the sort of thinking that has gotten Apple into hot water in the past. It will ultimately alienate its customer base as well.

NVIDIA ION LE hack adds DirectX 10 support, raises interesting questions {Engadget}

Oct 30th 2009 5:04PM This sort of thing is nothing new to the tech industry, and nVidia specifically. IBM used to 'upgrade' your printer by putting the belt that powered it (this was a while ago) on a faster cog, then changing the sticker on the front. For anyone that owns an nVidia Quadro FX, you're probably aware that the outrageously expensive card you purchased is essentially just a Geforce with optimised drivers for 3D work.

Motorola DROID review {Engadget}

Oct 30th 2009 4:50PM In the navigation video, for less than half a second, I thought he was going to say 'Let's see what happens...if I turn left on this street [that I can't turn left on].' Would have made for an awesome video. BTW, I thought the whole point of GPS navigation was to avoid Brooklyn. ;-p

Xperia Pureness unboxed, performs for the camera (video) {Engadget}

Oct 30th 2009 4:10PM Wow. I haven't seen a product so self-involved in a long time. It's like they took a concept sketch and decided, come hell or high water, they were not going to change anything about it, even when the display didn't really work, and the menu system was hokey, and the volume keys kept getting pushed accidentally (because that is going to happen), etc. Yep, this phone will certainly make a strong statement about you that everyone else will see at least a block away.

Rechargeable zinc-air batteries promise a lot, we'll see if they deliver in 2010 {Engadget}

Oct 30th 2009 10:33AM Thrilled school girl excitement for Apple products, but jaded disinterest in potentially real technological advancement? A significant shift in this field could have HUGE repercussions to the world economy and environment (well beyond how long our friggin smartphones last). I haven't heard of Zinc-air technology before, but I'm curious to learn more about it. In particular, how well it works in cold weather.

Important Norwegian consumer reads Amazon Kindle's EULA, sends angry letter {Engadget}

Oct 30th 2009 9:59AM Kudos to these guys for at least reading the EULA, and making people aware of its contents. It's better than assuming that standing up to bad corporate practices is futile. That Norway seems to care about its people might be part of the reason it is rated number 1 in the world right now.

Nintendo profits sink on declining console sales, weak game selection {Engadget}

Oct 29th 2009 10:11AM Never have so few done so little for so many, while grossing so much. Nintendo has made a major freak'n fetish out of giving the absolute minimum effort to keep its franchises alive.

I can't believe I agonized over whether to buy the WII or the 360. I went with XBOX, and it has become the central component of my home entertainment system (PVR, movies, game rentals, music, etc). Meanwhile, everyone I know that owns a WII, turn it on once in a blue moon, usually for parties. (Same goes for my kids' DS - my iPhone gets used more.) The WII owners I know usually have alternate game platforms that get a LOT more use.

Vuzix Wrap 310 video eyewear ships out to virtual big-screen lovers {Engadget}

Oct 26th 2009 12:55AM I thought LCD screens on were starting to ramp up pixel density for portable devices? I guess it will still be a while before they get to the sort of density required for this format, unless they go with larger displays and condense them optically (obviating the cool, small form factor in the process). Still, they should be capable of delivering 3D content for games and video.

Windows PC Scout patronizes, offers surprisingly good comparison tool {Engadget}

Oct 21st 2009 1:43AM It didn't find a single laptop with my specifications, but I found at least four name brand computers that did down at Best Buy. I suspect laptops have to fit into a number of MS precepts in order to qualify to be listed, or it's more of the 'does not work outside the US' bs. Either way, I don't see that it will do much good for anyone other than mom and dad, or anyone too lazy to do a bit of research.

Barnes and Noble 'confirms' color Plastic Logic e-book reader for Spring 2010 (video) {Engadget}

Oct 9th 2009 5:02AM I've been waiting for this product for a while. They appear to be approaching this very cautiously, and will have all their ducks in a row when it launches: on-line newspaper/magazine/book subscriptions, and lots of interactive capabilities. I'm also happy if it brings some competition to the Kindle, of course, which has justifiably benefited by being the first out of the gate. This will really up the ante.
