TIVO - are you listening ?

I will pay any price for the s3 Tivo. I don't care what it does or how much it costs. But I am waiting until someone cracks video extraction on it.

Once I can extract and save the video on my own fileserver for use on my other (often homebrew) devices then I will buy an s3 tivo. Until I can do that, it is a usseless box. Saving 250 GB of non-RAID-protected TV is for suckers - a total waste of time.

I think, deep down, you know this - I am hoping that your new content protection on the s3 is purposely weak because you know that as soon as the box is made "fully useful" by the community, a whole lot of sales will occur.

For now I wait ... HD s3 Tivo is useless. As soon as it becomes useful, I will buy one - and I don't care about the cost.

This is right up my alley ... I store the ripped dvds and cds (and other large and non-critical media) at home in my closet, I keep my vital information on a thumb drive or in mobile phone storage, and I keep my photos, documents, archives and other "life or death" data on an rsync.net - style offsite storage site.

Never mind the fact that I do not, as yet, have any of these three items :)

This describes exactly what I do myself to backup not only my blog(s) but also my home directory(ies) on various boxen.

One thing is missing - a secure place to put it all. I have been using rsync.net, who I highly recommend, as the target for my rsyncs. Not only do they let me use whatever access tool (over ssh) that I want (I sometimes use Unison and sftp) but they also let me upload a DSA key so that my uploads can go automatically.

One final comment - it should be noted that rsync will not give you any changes-only-transfer benefit if you encrypt your files individually.
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I just moved into a new apartment and have been reading about all of the new power strips out there, especially the green ones. I was wondering if you had any suggestions about which "green "power strips are out there with decent joules ratings. And when I say green, I mean power strips that have the remotes or switches to turn off all electricity flowing to certain plugs and with at least 2 plugs that are always on. I was looking specifically at sub $50 because I will need two, but if that is not possible I could be convinced otherwise. Thanks!"
