US files complaint with WTO over EU tariffs on high-tech products {Engadget}

May 29th 2008 8:54AM At least the EU is making up excuses, the US just ignores things like Free Trade Agreements whenever it feels like it, ie. Canadian Softwood Lumber. Which it illegally taxes entering the States.

Arkansas school has an 11-year-old IT department -- no, really, an 11-year-old {Engadget}

Mar 31st 2008 6:47PM And don't forget when the kids actually leave school, they're going to have to know how to use M$ products cos that's what the majority of businesses use, I mean how many businesses do you see that actually run Linux or Mac software outside of specialist IT stuff

New law makes "malicious" RFID spying illegal, corporations can do as they please {Engadget}

Mar 26th 2008 8:51AM This law ultimately doesn't mean anything... It's already illeagal to comit fraud/identity theft etc. so if you got caught hacking someones RFID whatever you would have been penalised anyway. The only part of this law that had any real meaning, was the bit disalowing corporations from tracking you, which Big Brother USA said was perfectly fine.

Course you could all just move up here to good old Canada where we still actually have freedom, liberty and democracy and where the powers of the corporations to track you have been curtailed recently after a few large US department stores had there d/b's hacked.

HTC's Dream again rumored to be first Android phone {Engadget}

Mar 20th 2008 8:58AM Hmmm... There seems to be a bit too much one handed phone fondling this morning...

NVIDIA's GeForce 9800 GX2 officially ready to shred your wallet {Engadget}

Mar 18th 2008 1:52PM If people never bought stuff like this then the companies would never bother to create new products, so we'd all be sitting around playing pong in glorious monochrome.....

Yes it's at a rediculous price now but in 4 years time when they slap it, or somthing similar to it, into a next-gen console I'm sure the prolitariat will be able to afford it, for now though it shall remain in the realm of the bourgouis.... :)

TiVo gets official with Desktop Plus 2.6, enables web video viewing {Engadget}

Mar 18th 2008 11:24AM I've had a Vista PC hooked up to my TV for a while, and find it very functional for playing music, watching DVD's etc. all using my remote. I haven't tried using the DVR functionallity yet but I've got a Tuner card that I haven't got around to installing, so when I do I'll see how well it works....

The much maligned Vista does actually have a surprisingly easy to use interface....

TiVo gets official with Desktop Plus 2.6, enables web video viewing {Engadget}

Mar 18th 2008 11:19AM The point I was trying to make is you build your own...

Tuner cards with ATSC and NTSC functionallity can be picked up for $69

Buy 2 and you can record 2 HD channels and 1 digital channel while at the same time watch a digital channel.

I just priced a machine on NewEgg for $1200 that contained a quad core processor a radeon 3870, Blue Ray drive, DVD burner, HTPC case, 500GB HDD, tuner card lot's of RAM, 7.1 surround, Vista... basically a machine that'll do everything a TIVO will do only better...

Now this isn't exactly cheap, but how much would it be to walk into a store and buy a TIVO, a stand alone Blue-Ray Drive, an amp and you still have to have a PC so you can get all this functionallity.

PC's are much, much cheaper.
