Ask Engadget: What's the best home media server? {Engadget}

Jun 27th 2008 10:01AM I love my HP Mediasmart. I got the ex470 (1x500gig drive) for $600. I added a 750gig drive I got on sale for $90.
Been working flawlessly for about 2 months now.
It has an iTunes server and a DLNA server so it can stream music, pictures and video to almost anything.
The automatic backups are great as well.
I'm quickly running out of space with three computers, but I have two empty drive bays - just waiting for a terabyte drive to go on sale somewhere...

FTTH deployments: we don't need no stinkin' IPTV {Engadget HD}

Jun 19th 2008 12:08PM Oof, that sucks.
I don't have FIOS (AT&T owns practically all of CT), but I have a lot of experience with friends & family's setups and I've never seen it that bad.
The problem is most likely the Motorola box, not the service.
I'm on the brink of getting an HD Tivo myself after repeated crashes/partial recordings of my SA8300HD box.

Seagate reveals Showcase external HDD: for media centers and DVRs {Engadget HD}

May 19th 2008 12:35PM @foxb
I believe it's because SA DVRs don't like 3Gbit/s SATA drives - they only accept the older, 1.5 Gbit/s SATA drives.
The good thing is usually 3Gbit/s SATA drives have jumpers that let you set them into "1.5 Gbit/s mode", then the SA DVRS will see them.
