I quite like the idea of an Ion-based HTPC because it will be nice on the electricity bill and also quiet, while serving up sufficient performance to view 1080p stuff.
My Olympus (mju/stylus) 1030SW goes to 10 meters, takes one helluva beating (I bet it can be used as an assault weapon), and costs 340$. It only does 30fps, though.
Seriously, I bet those kids are well aware that pulling the keys out is a bad idea. A few per school will do so, and the rest will laugh at the kid with no working laptop while taking care to only use it as an assault weapon.
