Black Friday Giveaways (part 10): iPod shuffle {Engadget}

Nov 23rd 2007 1:23PM Love the shuffle!

HD DVDs and Blu-ray discs appear in a local Blockbuster store {Engadget HD}

Jul 20th 2006 2:01PM Netflix anyone? Last time I heard they carried all of the titles currently available by both parties. No, it's not as visible as the local Blockbuster, but hey, it's a big freakin' internet store where anyone NATIONWIDE can rent everything out on both formats.

Why HD DVD will prevail: My opinion three months later {Engadget HD}

Jul 11th 2006 1:22PM Have you actually USED the HD-DVD players? They're horrendous! I work at a Best Buy and it crashes on us, doesn't respond to controls when it feels like it, and takes a HORRID amount of time to stop, play, load, or eject a disc. This often requires unplugging the player restarting it.

The Samsung BD player on the other hand loads and operates much more like a DVD player that consumers are used to. Right now Blu-ray looks OK because it's only a single layer disc with MPEG-2 compression. BUT in the Fall of 2006 they will begin releasing titles on the dual-layer format in either MPEG-4 or VC-1 compression which at that point will blow away what the HD-DVD is doing.

Unless HDDVD second-gen are a HUGE improvement over the current Toshiba player, in terms of user-friendliness, it's done for, in my opinion.

Denon's AVC-A1XVA receiver, or a small car? {Engadget}

Jun 21st 2006 10:23AM It looks like this is identical to the AVR-5805MK2 that is currently for sale in the US for $7K. The only discrepancy seems to be the amplifier ratings. The UK version is rated into 6Ohms and the US version is rated into 8Ohms. The UK is silver and the US is black. The MK2 also has 5 HDMI inputs and does upconverting to 1080P as well. The MK2 is already available in the US.

This model of receiver is also very useful as a whole house distribution system. Instead of purchasing separate receivers for each room, this one will do it by itself and to a much higher quality than cheaper separates. You can also find SERIOUS discounts on this unit on Pricegrabber.com and eBay that make it almost a "bargain".

Samsung's BD-P1000 Blu-ray box released early {Engadget}

Jun 15th 2006 8:36AM I work at a Best Buy in NC and while we are getting the Samsung BluRay player's in, they are to be on display only until the 25th at which time we are allowed to sell them. Big OOPS! for the guys in the Arkansas store. There were specific instructions sent via the BB In-Store newsletters to DISPLAY ONLY AND ABSOLUTELY DO NOT SELL until the 25th! Anyhow, I'm just glad a BluRay player is finally here.
