I get 3 hours out of my two year old bottom of the line macbook while doing web development in an airplane with my screen brightness all the way down.

If you aren't browsing the web with the beastly Flash player spinning your fan and aren't goofing around in iMovie for 4 hours straight I have no doubt most users will get the 6-8 hours.
Sound Recorder!!

I spent DAYS when I was a young lad in sound recorder. I grew up in a family that doesn't curse so I said every swear word I knew backwards, then used "reverse" to listen to me curse the day away.

Oh it was hilarious.
Excel.

I swear up and down at Microsoft most days, but not once at Excel. It's the best spreadsheet in the world.

It's closed more sales for me than any other tool and therefore responsible for a healthy chunk of my income.

I love you Excel.
It's like a sex change.
Tap your foot to move through menus (and get rid of a few menus while your at it).

Other than that the Wii Fit is a hit at my house. I love it and use it daily.
Again I say ... Samsung started the comparison on their own website. You can't criticize a journalist who continues the comparison.

In Mossberg's defense, Samsung has an entire website comparing this phone to the iPhone. http://nowisgood.com/

Any review of the phone by anybody ought to continue the fight of which Samsung threw the first punch.

That said, Mossberg is certainly twitterpaited with Apple.
I agree w/ your sentiments. As a mac user it does get hard to believe that any other company can do tech right because I enjoy my Apple products so much--but you have to keep those blinders off so you see great stuff when it comes out (like many of the notebooks that compete w/ the Air, they are fantastic).

Side note:
I do prefer iMovie '08 since I never cared to do videography in iMovie but just wanted store my videos on my computer in a handy library. Final Cut Express "replaced" iMovie HD--iMovie '08 is a new beast.
All you iPhone haters ...

iPhone:
Hot girl who finally got a master's degree, a big bank account, awesome summer house, etc.

The other phones:
Fat girl who has a doctorate degree, a big bank account, awesome summer house and a plastic keyboard.

You know you all would rather hang out with the hot girl. Unfortunately you haven't ever hung out with the hot girl so you can't understand why those of us who have, think she is so hot. Including Engadget's shameless coverage of something so simple as 3G on the iPhone.

If you'd go watch the keynote and see how incredible the SDK is for developers you'll maybe catch a glimpse at just how hot this girl is going to continue to get. Windows mobile on the other hand? Getting fatter.
All you need to know is that you aren't chopping off the subject's head, you can always crop later.

I too appreciate the Live View on my canon.
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I am trying to configure out a really dumbed down and intuitive PC for my grandmother. She recently had a stroke and while she is under my care I would like to repurpose a laptop for her to surf and email her children. Anyone have any experience with what input devices and UI's are really understandable for the over 80 crowd?"
