There's an app for that. Motion-X GPS can cache maps so that when you are out of cell range you can still use the GPS. There are a few more apps that do that too.

This is why I love engadget! You guys do an incredible job with updates.
I got a similar one but cheaper and less features: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823109059

Whatever you do DON'T get and IR keyboard, go RF or blue tooth. I had the first Media Center Keyboard from Microsoft and it sucks as a keyboard, the key presses were spotty and I found myself press keys twice and checking after everykey press to make sure it typed right. IR can be very frustrating.
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I'm in the market for a new phone and money isn't a limitation. I'm also not partial to any particular US carrier, but here are some of the features I'd like to have: WiFi, GPS, good coverage in lots of places, push Gmail (a must!), physical keyboard (a must!), a touchscreen, decent battery life and a relatively slim body. And please, nothing that has a fruit logo on it. No offense to the fruit fans, though. Thanks!"
