There is NO way you can have a valid opinion of Windows 7 while having only used it via a VM.
Sorry, that automatically disqualifies you.
As for the performance differences, even VM's have hypervisors (i.e. layers) that need to communicate with the guest OS through drivers and not all OS's have the same level of support or compatibility with VM's. This is still a Beta OS, remember that.
On the other hand, there's a reason why people who are actually running it as a host OS (be it primary or secondary) have praised it endlessly for its scalability -- from how smoothly it runs on lowly netbooks to how well it scales on Multi-Core systems.
I used to dual boot XP with Linux going as far back as 2003.
I've played with Red Hat, Fedora Core, and Ubuntu.
They honestly don't provide me with any compelling reason whatsoever to switch to.
On the contrary, I was missing support for many a driver, I wasn't able to use many of my apps, and it altogether failed to recognize certain pieces of hardware such as my MC68HC11EVBU (6811 Microprocessor Evaluation Board Unit) for my engineering projects.
In short, there was no reason whatsoever for me to switch over to Linux, none.
The only reason people even give it a second thought is because: a) it's free (and the server editions are cheaper than Windows Server editions) b) they want to play around with it
Some may argue that it's less prone to attacks, worms, virii, etc., but in all of my years of computing (nearly 20 years of using, building, programming now), I haven't received a single worm, virus, trojan, etc.
Nice. But why limit it to the European markets? Well I suppose they don't really have a feasible distribution model in place for the NA markets, but they are missing out on thousands if not millions of potential sales.
"I need help! I want a small pocket camcorder but I'm not sure which one to get. I don't want to fall into the hype of the Flip because I worry two hours won't be enough. What should I be looking for when considering a small camcorder and where can I get a good quality one with expandable memory? Thanks!"

Uh...no.
Where did I say I was "blaming" Linux.
Rather, I simply provided a list of reasons as to why I don't use it.
You don't call that blaming, you call that pointing out its shortcomings.
