How do you know they're not doing that?
No, it's really not. It's short and has little to no replayability. Sure there are the advanced chambers, but once you've beaten those they offer nothing more. The challenges are there for the sadists.

There are custom maps but the vast majority of them aren't worth playing through.

Portal is a game that works in the Orange Box and if it was something like 10$ through digital distribution. I'm not going to spend 20$ on a game that took me ~4 hours to complete though.
Portal, while a wonderful and incredibly fun game, is not worth 20$.
I live in Canada so I always forget about the US' stance on giving medication to old people.

Still though, $250 between what looks like in the pictures of the retirement home is a pretty large number of people wouldn't amount to much more than a dollar or two I would expect.

Between every old person in that retirement home they couldn't find $250? That's one sad retirement home.
He should donate the proceeds to Child's Play, it seems to be the popular thing to do now.
