3G is pretty stable where I live. I have a nokia 5800 unlocked on at&t and my download speeds are usually on the 250-300 kb/s.

I can't bitch about at&t, cus I've never had any trouble with it. It might not be the case in NY, Chicago and some other big cities.

I use Skype and Fringe to make voip (even video calls) over att's network and they work fine (not exceptionally, but they do the trick-- there is no way you could even do a video call on edge)

Trusting edge is just hoping on wifi hotspots everywhere. Unfortunately, that's not the case in my town. Plus, when I tether, I want 3G, not dialup edge.

However, 3G is a dealbreaker.. With speeds close to 10x to those of EDGE, I say it makes a big difference. Also, If you have a 3G phone with a plan, you don't want to downgrade to 1/10th of your speed.

Sure, if you have a little flip phone which does edge and it works fine for you and you go to the nexus one, but you will only get the real experience if you use it with 3G.

Being unable to make good/stable VOIP calls kinda beats the purpose of a VOIP phone...

Edge sucks. If you want to do Internet Browsing and VOIP, you need 3G. Unfortunately, the phone lacks the 3G network compatibilities to run on ATT's 3G network, so your stuck with EDGE in ATT.
