none of these things are new. i'm not a huge fan of apple or 'mandatory' things as much as anyone who dislikes being force fed, but the reasons are sound as long as there is no 'punishment'. people just need another reason to poopoo on the iphone / apple.

schools have been 'requiring' brands of computers / combination packages offered by their school for ages. it's done for a litany of reasons, but the largest being subsidizing (which has been known to happen with apple products at other schools) and the simplicity of teaching one platform for a concept versus a journalism professor having to be a tech guru and know every smartphone in the world. its as simple as requiring one textbook written by a specific author; many have the same information, but could you imagine teaching hundreds of students all using a different book?
